Description

In 2409, the Federation-Klingon War was dragging into its fourth year when a new threat emerged. The Borg returned, assimilating the colony on Vega IX in a surprise attack and establishing a beachhead in the Gamma Orionis sector block, in the far reaches of the Romulan Star Empire. Reduced to a despotic rump state in the wake of the Hobus supernova, and engulfed in a civil war with Reman rebels and a breakaway republic, it was unable to respond.

Given the severity of the situation the Federation and Klingon Empire temporarily set their hostilities aside and sent task forces to the area. This joint task force, Battle Group Omega, would then secure a staging area for other ships that would advance further into the sector in order to frustrate Borg efforts.

Starfleet’s heaviest assets next to the battlegroup’s flagship, U.S.S. Victory, were the battleships Hendrickson and Samoa. While smaller escorts would secure the perimeter of the staging ground, these two vessels served as a QRF (quick reaction force) to ships actively combating the Borg in the sector. Should any Starfleet vessel require assistance, one ship, or both if the situation proved dire enough, would sortie to render assistance, or help facilitate a retreat.

Hendrickson and Samoa successfully served in this role until the task force was stood down shortly after the Borg retreated from their positions, following a seemingly successful harassment campaign, in early 2410. With other threats on the horizon, there was simply no capacity left to patrol an, once again, unimportant frontier of the Beta quadrant.
