Something like this happened to me once when I was at a really low moment in my life. I pleaded with one of my friends to let me stay at their place for the night because trouble awaited me at home... but that friend turned me away.
To be fair, that friend could see how distraught I was and obviously didn't WANT to just turn me away in such a state, but having me stay at her place just wasn't viable at the time due to her own circumstances. Still, it really stung, being left out in the cold in every sense while I was so vulnerable, so upset.
So much for the magic of friendship...
