Description

A tense stand off between mother and daughter. In my next gen au Tiara is on bad terms with her mother and doesn't talk to her at all, mainly because she feels that Spoiled doesn't understand her at all.

Sorry about the writing, I'm not very good at it.

It was a beautiful day thought Diamond Dust, just as he hoped it would be. He was able to get some time off from his job of managing Twilight's library in Canterlot to come visit his parents in Ponyville and had arranged afternoon tea at the new tea shop in town to surprise his mother. Unfortunately his father Spike was away preforming his ambassador duties in the land of Dragons but it couldn't be helped and Diamond Dust certainly wouldn't hold it against his father. He briefly wondered what his father was doing right now before turning his attention to his mother walking beside him.

"Are you excited to see this new tea shop? I hear it's very popular now."

"Of course Dusty but really you didn't have to do this. I'm fine just going to the park or staying at home dear." His mother Diamond Tiara replied with a smile.

"But I wanted to treat you mother!" He laughed jollily.

She shook her head while smiling and was about to say something when she stopped dead in her tracks, the fur along her back standing on end. Dusty stopped immediately and stared down at her worriedly, confused as to what had happened.

"Mother...? Are you well? What's wrong?"

Dusty watched as her eyes narrowed and her ears lay back against her head; he wondered if he had said something wrong or upset her somehow but his attention was redirected at the haughty sound of someone clearing their throat and when he looked everything made sense. In front of him was Spoiled Rich, his grandmother, and she didn't look as though she was simply going to pass by them.

"My dear daughter, what are you doing out and about? I'd have thought you'd be at your jewellery shop?"

"As you can see mother I am enjoying a day out with my son." Was Diamond's clipped reply as she continued to glare holes into her mother.

"Oh yes... it is hard to miss him..." her eyes flickered over at her grandson; he squirmed under her sight before she looked back at the other female.

"I would have thought by now you'd have made your way into Canterlot's upper crust? After all why else would you be with that... dragon-" She snorted at the word dragon before continuing "-if not to get close to the Princesses? You should be with a rich gentlecolt now, why do you continue to waste your time with him?"

"As hard as it is for you to understand, I love Spike and my son. I didn't marry him for status!" At this Diamond stomped her hoof angrily.

"Why else would anyone be with him? No, you need to find yourself someone more suitable."

Dusty watched the two bicker and felt increasing awkward listening to his own grandmother degrade his father and himself. He really didn't understand why she disliked them so much. Were they not good enough? Mother always told him how much she loved him and his parents seemed to be really in love. So what was it? As he watched he noticed his mother getting more and more upset, by now she was shaking and breathing rather heavily.

"...Mother... we're going to be late." Dusty piped up quietly. As if coming out of a nightmare Diamond snapped her head towards him.

"Yes! Ah-hem yes, we'll be late... it was... good to see you but we must be on our way now."

"Humph, I see. We shall have to continue this later then... Goodbye." And with that Spoiled Rich brushed past them while staring down her daughter. Dusty watched her disappear out of sight and looked down at his mother who was still standing stock still. He leaned down and nuzzled her hair with his muzzle.

"Are... Are you going to be alright?" He uttered quietly to which his mother nodded slowly.

"Yes, I'll... I'll be fine sweetheart. Let's just go now ok?" She looked at him with tired eyes which stabbed at his heart. It hurt to see his mother like this.

"Mother... I love you and so does father, you know that right?"

Diamond smiled a small, but genuine, smile and raised a hood to stroke his hair.

"I know dear and I love you and your father too. I'm sorry if this spoiled your day."

"Of course not mother! let's go, I'm sure some tea and cake will take your mind off things." And with that they continued on their way but still Dusty couldn't help but wonder why his grandmother was this way... and he wondered deep down if his mother was happy with her life. He wondered if she thinks she made a mistake... was he a mistake?

Oh dang, here we go with the family drama! I wonder how this will be resolved - maintain a relationship, or drop the toxicity?
