Description
1964 Ford Fairlane 500 idling in the spring sunshine. This one's got a lovely-sounding 289 V8 up front. Fairlanes were produced at Ford's Lorain, Ohio facility between 1955 and 1971. They began as a full size car in the 50s, and then shrank to mid-size in the 60s, before growing again and ending as a sub-set of the Torino in 1970. Along the way, there were some notable variants, perhaps the best-known being the Ford Thunderbolt. That beast was produced in limited numbers for drag racing use on the same platform as the one here, but featured a 500HP 427 inch V8.Related content

I'm hoping one day to get a look at one of the Thunderbolts. You can tell those by the high beam headlights being replaced by grilled-over ram air intakes, a Plexiglas windshield, rear windows that can't be opened, and only one wiper. All I've seen so far are wannabes. Thunderbolts still hold the record for fastest production car in the quarter-mile and had to race with a full tank to meet the weight minimum. They didn't even come with floor mats, lol.
