Description
This artwork was made for a contest at #The3DArtistClub . The theme of this contest is the word "Fantasy". I asked if that included science fiction and was told yes. This room is easily my fantasy; a reality that I would love to live. A slightly weird technical future needs to hurry to now!*C-Williams worked with me on this project. She made all of the stuffed animals, the bear head slippers, and the spiral notebook in Cinema 4D R10.
I modeled everything else in Cinema 4D R11. I spent a few hours each day for about one month working on this. Loved every minute of it. I also made two Lain-only renders without the Borderlands, Portal, and other infused bits.
Stuff For Contest Judges:
Made in Cinema 4D R10 and R11.
Rendered in Cinema 4D R11 Advanced Render 3 with Global Illumination and Object Glow.
Render Duration: 32 hours 48 minutes (on a sad computer)
Memory: ca. 95240 KBytes
Points: 274770 (1783950)
Polygons: 273225 (1642137)
Objects: 1475 (7789)
Values in ()'s are what it would be if I exported it to another 3D program.
A simple animation showing the steps of this project:
No preexisting models were used except: 1) BBoy Bot (which I made a few weeks ago but never rendered), 2) the Morality Core (I made that many months ago. You can download it from my Resources gallery.), 3) the Wired Device (another that I made many months ago). 4) The computer on the left with the green screen was made for a speed model thing a few weeks ago. Everything else was made for this project.
Credits and Sources:
The general room design and the computer screens are based on the anime Serial Experiments Lain . Artwork used for book and CD covers are images from Lain-related products (artbooks, music). One of the CD covers is of my favorite album by the group Bรดa . That CD contains the track that became the opening theme to Lain.
The Morality Core is based on a character from the video game Portal . The Sentry Turret box art was pulled from the video game files of Portal 2 .
The WIRED (little red thing to the right on the floor) is based on an item in the video game Borderlands . The word "Wired" is also used in Lain as the term for a type of internet that allows you to fully immerse yourself into it.. There's no way I can explain that briefly, but the addition of this item is meant as a joke (for fans) on the name association, and for my love of Borderlands.
The robot on the floor above the WIRED device is based on the giant robot from the Beastie Boys Intergalactic super hit music ultra motion video!
I used a free addon called CityGen to quickly create the random building shapes outside the window.
Lain had 13 episodes with titles like "Layer 03: Psyche", "Layer 10: Love", "Layer: 13 Ego". I chose the Portal Morality Core because I thought it fit best in the Lain world and with the title system. Also, this is a type of progress report on my modeling skills - my last major Portal Scene .

This is really cool! I love all the little details like the poster, screens, and stuffed animals. And nice morality core there. It looks like it's having a good time
