Description This artwork was made for a contest at #The3DArtistClub . The theme of this contest is the word "Fantasy". I asked if that included science fiction and was told yes. This room is easily my fantasy; a reality that I would love to live. A slightly weird technical future needs to hurry to now!

*C-Williams worked with me on this project. She made all of the stuffed animals, the bear head slippers, and the spiral notebook in Cinema 4D R10. She even upgraded her computer a bit just to be able to participate. Such a wonderful, talented, and funny girl. It is a delight to know her. The image in the picture frame on the desk, and the images on the wall posters were made by her.

I modeled everything else in Cinema 4D R11. I spent a few hours each day for about one month working on this. Loved every minute of it. I also made two Lain-only renders without the Borderlands, Portal, and other infused bits.

Stuff For Contest Judges:
Made in Cinema 4D R10 and R11.
Rendered in Cinema 4D R11 Advanced Render 3 with Global Illumination and Object Glow.
Render Duration: 32 hours 48 minutes (on a sad computer)
Memory: ca. 95240 KBytes
Points: 274770 (1783950)
Polygons: 273225 (1642137)
Objects: 1475 (7789)
Values in ()'s are what it would be if I exported it to another 3D program.

A simple animation showing the steps of this project:

No preexisting models were used except: 1) BBoy Bot (which I made a few weeks ago but never rendered), 2) the Morality Core (I made that many months ago. You can download it from my Resources gallery.), 3) the Wired Device (another that I made many months ago). 4) The computer on the left with the green screen was made for a speed model thing a few weeks ago. Everything else was made for this project.

Credits and Sources:
The general room design and the computer screens are based on the anime Serial Experiments Lain . Artwork used for book and CD covers are images from Lain-related products (artbooks, music). One of the CD covers is of my favorite album by the group Bรดa . That CD contains the track that became the opening theme to Lain.

The Morality Core is based on a character from the video game Portal . The Sentry Turret box art was pulled from the video game files of Portal 2 .

The WIRED (little red thing to the right on the floor) is based on an item in the video game Borderlands . The word "Wired" is also used in Lain as the term for a type of internet that allows you to fully immerse yourself into it.. There's no way I can explain that briefly, but the addition of this item is meant as a joke (for fans) on the name association, and for my love of Borderlands.

The robot on the floor above the WIRED device is based on the giant robot from the Beastie Boys Intergalactic super hit music ultra motion video!

I used a free addon called CityGen to quickly create the random building shapes outside the window.

Lain had 13 episodes with titles like "Layer 03: Psyche", "Layer 10: Love", "Layer: 13 Ego". I chose the Portal Morality Core because I thought it fit best in the Lain world and with the title system. Also, this is a type of progress report on my modeling skills - my last major Portal Scene .

I can't model organic shapes like people, plants or sports cars. Everything I do is hard surface modeling. Recently I learned how to model a teddy bear. That's the most complex organic shape I can make and I can't even do that very well.

lot of detail in this i like it. though i think larger monitors are in order for such hi-techness considering it looks like ya got a Server/render farm in the room

i love that anime.

I almost make widescreens but felt I had to stay closer to the originals. Maybe I'll design my own computer room some day.

The voting is really close between you and I.

I have an idea to make it more exciting. You and I could have a little contest between ourselves. If you receive more votes then I will make a model for you, and if I have more votes then you make something for me. No worries at all if you're not interested. It's just a thought at this moment.

lol yeah the odds are looking pretty bad. funny enough the top one i think is the worst o.o*cough cough* lol out of the lot the other two are pretty cool and that guy just recycled his old work and put it over a photo of a forest. -.-

sure why not could be fun cant promise anything on my side as i might be starting a full time job soon but what would you like as a prize

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

100SeedlessPenguins In reply to MishraFathom [2011-07-27 22:29:44 +0000 UTC]

I think each is good artwork in it's own respect. However I will say that the top guy makes me sad because I spent so many days slaving on mine (specifically for this contest) and he simply opened an old project and made a new render. That kinda hurts. But there was nothing in the rules to prevent people from doing that. But I'm very happy that I did it, and my works are much better now because of it. That's my prize.

I don't know what model I would want from you. You'll have more votes than me anyways. So what do _you_ want Mr Mishra?

MishraFathom In reply to 100SeedlessPenguins [2011-07-27 22:36:35 +0000 UTC]

something simple and fun well whatever cell phone you have make a model of that for me and make a nice render of it too i find they are more of a challenge then people give credit for.

i still dont think the guy in the lead is all that good the other two are better infact a few others who did not make it this far are better so that sucks. but guess people like random dragons and are judging it by its thumbnail...>.> its not bad but honestly i would say atleast 2nd one made it from scratch and has better lighting and though 3rd is using a poser model he made an amazing render and i think he made all the cloths and the weapons just not the actual female character. so still good and good render.

100SeedlessPenguins In reply to MishraFathom [2011-07-28 10:51:03 +0000 UTC]

That will be fun. I'll make the first system and game disc that I played.. Give me a bit of time. I'm in the middle of a big project. I will enjoy making this for you. What format do you want the file? I can export to 3DS or OBJ (but the OBJ looses material information).

Thank you! Since the day the contest was announced I stressed every day for 1 to 3 hours to make this. I thought I only had one month. If I had known it was 2 months I would've made more, but now I feel burnt out from the project. lol.

This [link] was the image file I used for my first size reference. I loaded that into my 3D program and started modeling the desk, the closets and then the walls/window. I estimated the top height based on the height of the lower half of the closet doors. My bed height also came from that image. Most of the rest of my modeling was based on sketches by the original artist. The scale in the show changes. As they add more computer parts, they dim the lights and raise the ceiling. If you count the blades on the closet doors you'll see that they increase by a few at the top, and the desk becomes lower by one notch after the second phase of upgrades.
