Description
Look at that cute filly Lyra and Derpy. D'awww!Remember how your parents always tell you never to cross your eyes or they might get stuck that way? Yeah. Also I was thinking for my next piece maybe I should make a drawing, I think I need a break from comics for a bit.
Also I only have 2 weeks left of premium ;-;

just put your hand in front of your face and look at it, then move your hand away. Your eyes should be now crossed.

Just one quick critique beyond what I said on reddit, and not enough for the dA critique function (though it'd be nice if that weren't just for looks this time): both Lyra and Derpy's legs are broken, and Lyra's hock is sticking out in a way that it shouldn't be. It's too thin and small, and leads into a bent knee that doesn't exist; the foot just leads right into the body. You need to watch out for this on sitting ponies, since the show does them pretty frequently and it doesn't look anything like this, since they include the legs. This here is just a foot.

Haha that was you on reddit? I saw what you said but I rly didn't get it, maybe I'll just look up sitting ponies and see how they look. This is how Dori-to taught me and yeah it looks funky but he insists this is more right than my way :/

Yeah, that's meβOnsaud on both sites.
Ehh, actually, Dori-to has the exact same problem, and to be honest you really shouldn't take his word as such a final say on stuffβnot to be mean, I've never interacted with they guyβbut his art's not the best when it comes to anatomy and style. You seem to be copying him almost exactly (your comic is practically a facsimile of this one), which I can't recommend; trying to emulate and reproduce another artist never works well, and Dori-to has a lot of mistakes that you're making, too. Here's a diagram. Orange is how he does it, purple is how it should be. When ponies are sitting, even upright like Lyra, their legs are curled up on top of their feet, like a cat. They don't just stick straight out. If they did, they would be much longer and have a visible hock. Trust me, it's not "more right" than anything, and it doesn't match the anatomy of the show or anything in reality.

Alright, thanks. He always criticizes me for trying to be too anatomically correct but I guess I just have to find my own way.

Onsaud In reply to 10art1 [2012-12-22 06:12:43 +0000 UTC]
Wait, hold on, whoaβI misread that. He criticizes you for trying to be too anatomically correct? What does that even mean? Skimping on anatomical correctness, particularly in a static image, is not something bad. The show can get away with it because it's a cartoon, and things can be fudged for purposes of movement or expression. But in a drawn picture, it's staying that way forever and you can't afford to have it look weird. I dunno much about Dori-to, but given what he seems to have told you about art he doesn't sound like someone I'd trust for advice.

he says that my way may be anatomically correct but it looks funny and looking good is more important than being correct

Onsaud In reply to 10art1 [2012-12-23 05:05:46 +0000 UTC]
Well, the problemβas I see itβis that his stuff is neither anatomically correct nor does it look good.

Well I don't want you to bash him, I think he is a great artist. I think you have a valid point of view but I'd just like to know what I'm doing wrong BEFORE I put it up on dA

It's not a good idea to get your feedback exclusively from one source. The more opinions you get the surer you can be that the feedback will be reliable.

Hm... you could ask people from the sub directly by messaging them or asking on the IRC channel.

I may be talking to myself, but I actually do find fault with a lot of his pictures... I really don't think you should be going to this guy for art help. He may be all right in some areas, but in plenty others it's just weird. Not somebody I'd use as an artistic role model.

Dori-to In reply to Onsaud [2012-12-23 13:53:39 +0000 UTC]
I'm sorry but the way you're talking about me makes me really sad. I don't mind that you have your doubts about my work, but I really don't like the way you are setting my friends up against me.
We're all here to learn from eachother and we all have a different view on art but please have the gut to tell that to my face and write a critique on MY work instead of complaining about it to someone else.

Onsaud In reply to Dori-to [2012-12-23 20:25:33 +0000 UTC]
I'm sorry, went the line with criticizing your work specifically, but my main problem was with the advice you seemed to have been giving to 10art1. My conversation was with 10art1, and I wasn't aware of your involvement until he brought you up. I felt it would be rude to go out of my way to find and confront you in person, but I can see how it would be just as rude to talk about you behind your back. I apologize.
Like I said, I overstepped my point in talking specifically about your art, but the point I was trying to push was that I don't like the advice 10art1 says he got from you; my goal wasn't to complain, but to use your art as an example. It sounds like you told him that anatomical correctness comes second to a good appearance. In some cases this might be right, but in the cases I've seen in both his and your art I have to disagree. The broken and incomplete legs bother me a lot; they're not something the show does, they're not something that happens in real life and, in my opinion, are not something that looks good. It's not too hard to make a sitting leg that also looks good, and I didn't like the way it sounded like you were cautioning 10art1 away from that. I may just have misunderstood that and I definitely got carried away in trying to use your stuff as examples, but I still stand by my point.

Dori-to In reply to Onsaud [2012-12-25 02:51:56 +0000 UTC]
I am glad you took it so well. I will really take your critique in account for my next drawing. But I took it quite personal and I talked to 10art1 about it too, and everything worked out quite well. So we all learned something, now please excuse me while I go and write a letter to Princess Celestia.

Dori-to In reply to Onsaud [2012-12-25 10:23:29 +0000 UTC]
I talked to him about dropping me as a teacher (I gave him some drawing lessons over skype/livestream) after getting some critique. Also, I noticed you left the Tacohat Comics group, what an elegant solution.

Onsaud In reply to Dori-to [2012-12-25 17:36:04 +0000 UTC]
Maybe it's overkill to drop lessons entirely, and instead to get advice from a variety of sources. I suggested he look for help on /r/MLPDrawingschool or its IRC channel, or any other places he could think of.
That was mostly just because I was trying to clean out my groups, it happened before I talked to 10art1. I never participated or paid much attention to it, so I got rid of itβI mostly just use deviantART for personally involved things; I don't watch many people I don't myself "know" on some level.

That's fine, and it's how the show does it. I think it looks better tooβmatters of taste are neither wrong nor right. Just remember that not everything is a matter of taste.
