My father told me once that he was preparing the end of the feather by putting it into a very hot sand. Then he was shaping it to make a quill. It supposed to make the end harder and at the same time better to use
I've never tried it though- I shall try it once...

I am aware that you can reshape a feather with heat, but have never heard that it changes the quality of the feather. I have used them foe pen and ink for years. I shall have to experiment. to see if I can tell any difference. I know that an untreated feather will work very nicely.
thank you

Wow
Do you write or draw with it?
I love calligraphy, but I'm just writing in different styles with my pen, but I've never used a real quill...

Isn't it too hard to draw with a quill?

not really, I usually start with a pencil sketch and over work with ink. I have dripped ink and ruined my work though.

I have a friend locally who uses a watercolor brush for ink work. I have tried this also, but I didn't like it.

Like the japanese calligraphy?
Once- in primary school- I've made a pictrue with ink and then using a brush and the water I was kind of blending it (the ink was still wet). The effect was quite nice. I had to make a storm on the sea and it worked out perfectly. The memory of it makes me want to do it soon again
Ok, I'm making you quite an "off topic" here, am I not?
Sorry

yes, like Japanese calligraphy.
thinning the ink to give it varying intensities, This is interesting, I will have to play with this also.
there is no need to apologize, it is an interesting tangent.

Yes- you're right- it was a really interesting conversation.
I've learnt something new and I'm really grateful.
Thank you

I have some interesting things to try, and will get to learn things before I am done.
I thank you very much.
I am looking forward to hearing from you again

Awesome! Is there any kind of feather I should go with or does it really not matter?

Any feather will work, but the smaller quills are harder to work with. Goose quills are about 5/16 inch of diameter and are traditional. In general I don't use quills smaller than 3/16
sorry it took so long to answer

I would love to make a quill pen, but I can't quite make sense of your drawings. Maybe if you gave a little more explanation in the artists comments? Explain where each cut is in relation to others, maybe? ^_^ just a suggestion, and thank you for putting this up! It helps, even if I'm not able to how it works clearly... heh.

You will need a very sharp knife, but once you figure out how to do it, it is faster to do than to read this page.
(I like the way they write too)
