Description I recently finished Viktor Hugo's original novel and BOY is it depressing. I knew it was going to be, but I didn't know it was going to be SO FREAKING UNFORTUNATE. So many misunderstandings and so many irritating characters. I hated both Esmerelda and Pheobus with a passion by the end of the book. Frollo creeped me out but I felt worse for him when he died then I did for Esmerelda...who has to be the dumbest chick in ANY novel. The only character I liked the whole way through was Quasimodo...(although, this hardly surprised me) and almost EVERYTHING in the book having to do with him was so unbearably sad. Also, I have to admit he inspires some fairly awkward feelings in the reader. He manages to be both extremely sweet and extremely threatening at the same time. I thoroughly hated Frollo's younger brother by the end of the book, but the way Quasimodo killed him still made me cringe a little.

Sigh, still it was a great book. I was actually fairly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Despite his love for long winded descriptions Viktor Hugo really knows how to engage the reader and he also had something of a sense of humor, which is always good.

Anyways because of all this I'm a little taken with this character. So...yay Disney fanart Oo

Quasimodo belongs to Disney and Viktor Hugo.

I received the book as a Christmas gift a couple of years ago, and started reading it around the time when the story took place, in January.Β
Β Unless you are an architecture major, steer clear of the chapter where Hugo goes into describing the cathedral...snooze.

Β Yes, I found Esmeralda completely idiotic, but after all, she was a 16 year old girl...I felt so bad for her mother, and how she died at the end, but it was pretty much kismet. Apple doesn't fall from the tree.

Quasi was really the only likeable character in the novel, right to the end. Poor guy.

I think if Quasimodo is handsome and not a hunchback he will look like Demitri from Anastasia.

This is really wonderful, I love it I love a woman called Rose and she is the most wonderful woman in the world but I am not that good-looking and feel like Quasimodo in front of her and seeing this picture really touches me, because I wanted to hold her in my arms just like Quasimodo is holding this rose in his hand, I watched the musical comedy of Hunchback of Notre-Dames and there was something Quasimodo said "my ugliness is an insult to your beauty" and it's so sad, here's the song on youtube, it's in french but there are sub-titles [link] the song is really sad..Quasimodo is a wonderful character well-displayed in your work

I have seen the Disney version so many times I almost have it memorized. I'm also reading the novel and thoroughly enjoying it, and I watched the silent-movie with Lon Chaney as Quasimodo and loved it. You are absolutely right, Esmeralda is an idiot! And when I watched the Disney version for the first time in fourteen years I was mad at her for friendzoning Quasi and breaking his heart. when she was cleaning Phoebus's wound and she kissed him, Quasimodo's expression made me cry. He's such a darling.

13TheWicked13 In reply to SmashProX [2011-02-15 22:44:38 +0000 UTC]

Not very well. It's not bad, I mean it's a pretty decent depiction for kids but the closest any film comes to the movie are either the Anthony Quinn version or the Anthony Hopkins version and the Anthony Quinn version is kinda dull. The Charles Laughton one is pretty close too.

I liked the 1923 version(it's a silent movie), which is the only other version I've seen besides the 1996 Disney. Quasimodo was so endearing, except when he was being a douche and making faces at the people from his tower. He had a pretty bad attitude, poor guy. XD
But the part toward the beginning that showed him ringing the bells, and a caption came up and said something about the bells being the only voice for his groping soul, and showed him smiling and clasping his hands together like the bells were the only thing he cared about, I Awwww'd big time.

Alot of people only know it by the 1997 version. AKA Disney.

Milk me sideways and call me a spacecow. You caught his look perfectly! Your artists comment has inspired me to read the book, heading to the public library tomorrow. You really did this drawing well! I like your shading style. And, his hands are flawless. It's sort of ironic how he hides the only eye that isn't misshaped behind his hair, isn't it? xD Anyways, I just watched the movie - and it pissed me off, at the same time as I wanted to cry. I felt so sorry for Quasimodo, I wanted to just massacre all of the people who called him ugly and threw vegetables at him. Oh, if he was only real - well. Everything went fine in the end though. But I can't say I approve of The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2. It's badly drawn, or - worse drawn than the original, and I get jealous at the circus woman. xD Anyways, as I was saying - that face of his that you drew - PERFECT. I love Quasimodo. The best personalities are in the worst treaten ones.

Why thank you very much Yeah the movie alwayspissed me off for that reason too. I can't stand any Disney sequels, but yea, the art style in HoND2 is dreadful.

Thanks so much for your comment.

Awww! I'm pretty sure I'd marry Quasimodo, "deaf, hunchbacked, one-eyed, and lame" as he is. He's about a gazillion times better than Phoebus. Stupid, stupid Esmeralda.

Anyway, this is beautiful! I love the colors. Looked like a screenshot when I saw the thumbnail, but then I thought, "Hey, that scene's not in the movie." Great work! (By the way, this is Bixby, who reviewed your awesome story on FF.Net.)
