Ok , here is something to illustrate my shadow tutorial.[link]
In this case , I am using a great line art from
when I do shadows , I like to paint the black over a white flat.
it gave the image a statue look , and its very easy to see if the shadows are on the right place .
you can see the volume and the projected ones clearly this way
try this .
find a line art that you like , make a psd file of 3 layers.
Line , shadows , and BG
choose a light source , put the opacity of the shadow layer to %35, and use a pure black brush at 100%
have fun , and send me a link to your work .

I am not a big fun of real photos on bgs , because they steal the attention of the character .
and you can try some more soft volume shadows too .

Well the background is from an mmorpg Silkroad online (the character is also from that game)
Im not really good at doing bg's myself so i put the scenery from the game/show that the characeters come from or leave it blank

The grey tones look good. Getting the exact shadows is a lot of the battle. At this point its like semi cell shaded style, which due to having a low ability to work this stuff out visually I tend to just wing it. Still even from this point after applying the shadows there is a hell of a lot to do

I really like your shading. I think I am one of the few people that is not a fan of his art though. I find the way he drawn the female form a bit uncomfortable to look at. Just not my cup of tea.
