Description

This time, FrostedCow and I did an rp! I think it's the first time I actually have rped for SC!

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

The pups had been born only days ago. Their little eyes still hadn't opened. Madison was nursing Estelle and Boss had taken Damien for some play time, even as little as he still was. I had taken Allison and Santiago to play with myself. The fear of being a father completely vanished when I saw my babies. They're so small and vulnerable. It's my job to protect these pups, and the thought warms my heart. These four little pups were half of me and half of Madison. We brought them to life all on our own. It made me happy in a way I never knew.

To say the least, I found the wriggly balls of fur very intriguing. I'd spent so little time around pups, I'd never seen one so close and so young. They certainly liked to climb and wiggle around, even if they couldn't explore their surroundings with their eyes. They sniffed and tried nibbling my stomach for milk. Their appetite surprised me, as well. I nosed them upright several times, and practiced picking them up without harming the little ones. It actually came quite easily. It was incredible how small they were. I couldn't stop thinking about that, it seemed.

Suddenly, my world had shifted. It seemed that even the stars I knew changed with the gravity of their existence. These beautiful puppies were mine and Madison's, and the pack had been so welcoming and excited about them.

Boss wanted to play with them. She'd been so amazed when they came here. Cole, the red make that had alerted me of Maddie giving birth, was very kind and considerate, stopping by often to be sure we had anything we needed. I had grown to like him, and I certainly appreciated his help. The Dagsworth females, Sheesh, Julie, and Ash, had all come to visit them, as well. Julie was mesmerized by the little things, and she was very sweet and helpful, too. Sheesha was congratulatory, like many others. Ash was always checking on them, and she played with them, too, finding the pups as intriguing as I did. She stayed closest the most, and I loved the company of my friend.

When my pups grew tired, I laid down with them, collecting the two between my paws. Santi tried climbing out, while Allison curled close.

"Rex?" A familiar voice called. I smiled to Ash in the doorway. She was hesitant to step in, as always, worried to disturb me and my babies.

"Come in, Ash. You're welcome," I assured her, flashing a smile and licking Santiago to soothe him to sleep.

"I just came to check on you three," she said shyly, wagging her tail at the sight of us lying together. She took a seat nearby, but gave us plenty of space even though it wasn't necessary.

[Ash]

I smiled warmly as I peered down at the small bundles of fur that wriggled amid Rex's paws, their sweet noses twitching as they explored the environment around them. One of the pups, Allison, opened her mouth in a wide yawn, her small tongue curling up against the roof of her mouth. "They really are beautiful, Rex." I hummed, glancing up at the golden shepherd. His eyes sparkled with love for his puppies as he stared down at them.

"Thank you," he murmured, nuzzling the red and cream pup who had now fallen asleep against one of his paws. He looked up to meet my gaze, "I couldn't be happier, Ash. I really couldn't." The other puppy, the one that looked more like Rex in my eyes, Santiago, now crawled over to where his sister lied, and snuggled up against her. His tiny little movements ceased as he fell fast asleep.  Rex glanced up at me, his soft expression changing. "So, I'm happy here, but, what about you? Are you happy in Dagsworth?"

I perked up my ears as the conversation changed from puppy talk to talk about, well, me. "Oh, of course I'm happy, Rex. I'm a healer, and we have an Alpha to lead us, and now, I have you and Maddie now that peace has been called between our packs." I said, smiling at him. I was happy, wasn't I?

[Rex]

I shifted slightly. Not enough, however, to wake the pups. "But… are you alone there? Or do you have someone…?" I asked quietly, eyes shifting from hers to her bandana. She shouldn't be alone. No one should. Everyone needed someone to look after them in life. I had Madison and she had me, but who did Ash have back home. That scarred one-eyed black dog, perhaps? I didn't like the thought of my friend suffering from loneliness.

[Ash]

My eyes followed his as his gaze fell to the pastel green garment wrapped around my neck. "Someone...?" My ears went back slightly as I realized what he was insinuating and I felt my face flush. "Well, I-um, I have lots of packmates to keep me company, and they keep me busy, too." Wasn't that enough? To have a pack that I could care for and that could care for me? Was there something more? Someone more?

[Rex]

My ears pricked gently and my golden gaze returned to meet her eyes. "You know that's not what I meant." I flashed a small, friendly smile. "You can talk to me, Ash. I won't breathe a word," I promise.

[Ash]

I shuffled my paws a little nervously and smiled sheepishly as his gaze returned to meet mine. I had never talked to someone about anything like this. In all honestly, I had never felt anything like it either. "Oh, well, I don't know, Rex...." My gaze slid to the side and my ears felt hot. "My Alpha, well, Sirius, I just-I just don't know how to explain it. I suppose I just feel safe when he's around, but not the same way I feel safe around Voin." I furrowed my brows as I spoke. It was an unusual feeling. I looked back up to Rex, "It leaves me breathless."

[Rex]

I couldn't help but chuckle. It was a deep, rolling laugh from my chest. The dark shepherd. I'd been right about his interest in her, and now I knew that the feeling was mutual. "Your alpha," I hummed in amusement, but took note of how quickly nervous she became when I did. "That would be the one, wouldn't it? Big, strong, and so so protective. I'm sure he returns your sympathies," I assure her. "What a pair you two would make. Mm." My tail sweeps across the floor in a wag.

[Ash]

My ears pinned against the side of my head in embarrassment at the hearty sound of Rex's chuckle. "Oh, I don't know about that...." I said quietly, thinking back to the oh so handsome black and tan Shepard I had left behind. Surely he couldn't feel the same way, he was the alpha! It was his job to take care of everyone. Perhaps the bandana was simply something he felt I needed. Although, it made me sad to think it didn't have any special meaning behind it.

[Rex]

"Ash," I sighed, looking her over. The sweet dog looked worried, or perhaps unnerved. "I saw how he looked at you, my friend. That wasn't the look of someone who felt nothing more than responsible for you. And Alphas in my experience don't go around giving gifts to sweet ladies," I pointed out, smirking at her.

[Ash]

I looked up at Rex, little sparks jumping around in my chest at his words. "Do you really think so?" I tried to mask the hidden hopefulness in my voice, but couldn't help the cheerful tune that escaped my words. My tail did a little sweep across the floor, but I quickly tamed it.

[Rex]

I can't stop my chuckle when it returns. "I really do. Not that I know the fella, but he likes you, alright." My tail wagged and I grinned brightly at her. "Ask him."

[Ash]

"Ask him?" I pulled my head back in surprise, my eyes going wide. "I can't just ask him, Rex! He's my alpha!"

[Rex]

I tilted my head. "And why not?" I asked curiously. "He's still a dog, no different than any other. And it didn't seem to me that he was incredibly closed off about it." I nod again to her scarf.

[Ash]

I fidgeted and looked down at the ground. Like any other dog? No, that was most certainly not true. He was my alpha for goodness sakes! "Did you ask Madison?" I asked honestly.

[Rex]

I sigh, then shake my head. "No," I reply honestly. It was quite different for us. I certainly felt for her, but I never openly expressed it. I was afraid to hurt her. But things have changed. "I never had to. We both just knew." I smile softly. "I take it back. Don't ask. If it's right, Ash, you'll know. And so will he."

[Ash]

"I'll just... know it." I murmured, parroting his words. I turned my head downward to glance at the green bandana I had worn during my time at the Dunkles. It really had been a handy little thing, and now smelled of herbs and strange dogs. Even now, I could feel the faint imprint of the leaves and roots gently tucked into the flower-printed cloth. I looked back up to Rex, "and what if it's not right? Will I still know?"

[Rex]

"Yes. And you'll find someone else who you belong with. But just see. He seems to care greatly for you." I look up to my friend's brown eyes. She's so kind and good. She'll find someone very special.

[Ash]

"Thank you, Rex." I said stepping closer and nuzzling the side of my good friend's head. "I hope you're right." I really hoped he was. I thought back to my long time in the Dagsworth pack. I had sworn my loyalty to three alphas for really no reason at all. I had treated countless wounds and watched as my friends came and went. Perhaps this was the start of something real for me, something good.

[Rex]

"Don't thank me, now. I'm the one that needs to be thanking you. You've been a big help here and with the pups. I can't imagine what way we'd be in if you hadn't come." I nuzzled her gently back and smiled gratefully. "As I heard it, you're leaving soon? Going back home, I assume?"

[Ash]

I smiled, "It was a pleasure, I'm so glad I got the chance to see your puppies." I pulled away from him and nodded. "Yes, it's about time I headed back. I miss my pack, and I'm afraid to be gone too long with those Vryheid beasts on the loose." I shifted slightly, "It's rumored that our beta has gone missing."

[Rex]

"Oh my," I mumbled, ears flicking back slightly. "I'm sorry to hear that. We lost a few pack members to the pound. Perhaps your beta is there. Either way, I'm sure your Alpha… Sirius? I'm sure he needs all the help he can get. Thank you once again for coming when I came to you." It meant the world to me. The past is behind us now, and we've become friends again. In my mind, that's a wonderful thing. Good friends are hard to come by.

[Ash]

"Perhaps." I said, "I would hope the pound caught him up before the Vryheid did, at least then he has a chance at happiness." I had never been to the pound, but the Dags had fallen victim to a particularly large clean up in the past year. I couldn't help but feel dread at the idea of Dunkle dogs going missing. That could mean Dags dogs had been caught up as well. I looked warmly at Rex, "I would do it again in a heartbeat." My eyes fell to the puppies sleeping soundly by Rex's chest. I smiled, "I suppose I should let you get back to your puppies now."

[Rex]

I nodded curtly to the stabyhound. Courteous as she is, and as nice the company, I'd be happy to be alone with my pups again. "Anytime you need us, just come and ask. You're always welcome with me and Madison." I wagged my tail softly, then laid my head on my paw next to my sleeping little pups. "Good luck," I whispered, and of course, gave a wink.
