1977. This creation has been permanently part of my memory, as well, as protocol droid C-3PO from that year. The designs as envisioned by George Lucas and visually interpreted by master draftsman, the late Mr. Ralph McQuarrie continues to captivate the imagination. Anything is possible....

He was a great artist used as a tool in Lucas's vision, shame everything comes to an end. Lets hope the new movies will be as good as the prequels, I can't say originals because I know they will never live up to those expectations.

Well, McQuarrie was asked back to work on the prequels by Lucas, however, McQuarrie looked at the team of Doug Chiang, and decided (mistakenly, in my opinion) that new artistic staff could take of this.
My misgivings about George after the prequels were finished (pun intended) is that, indeed, Mr. Lucas needed tremendous help in just adding the depth that is lacking in his approach to story writing.
For you to hope that the new stories will match up with the prequels is very disappointing and one of the reasons that, I believe, mediocrity is the bedmate of today's creative thinking.
The original movies, particularly, in regards to the 1977 movie is a personal effort, a singular vision by George Lucas, therefore, he somehow, with his kind of aesthetic rooted from childhood days spent watching Flash Gordon serials, comics and later on fascination with speed, souping up cars and photography and even soon entering college and all the turmoil that was happening in the mid 1960s and onwards, something develop free from conventionality.
What he has come to now, recently, is a perplexing view that may seem out of touch and with the audacity that Disney Studios now announces they will continue the series and George having acknowledging that he has written treatments, all in all, in the former, they have a disastrous record in the science fiction genre and as for the former, his shallow and unwise decision to write all alone has proven he has not matured, story wise, through the years.
This is tragic.
