switch more environmental lights on so we can see the hull!

and a little bit of DOF - as it would make it a bit more realistic and lets us judge distances better.

Thanks - still a WIP at this point I won't do DOF or anything like that until final shots. Not too much environmental lighting either, in the movie the ship was in almost total darkness throughout the movie due to the large shield.

That's tremendous!

One thing - it looks quite dark, on my screen at least. (That's a problem I wrestle with frequently, BTW). I remember in the film they had darkness behind the big heat-shield, but somehow enough light kicking around to show the shapes. I would have to look at it again - I don't recall what the "recipe" was for showing the ship in darkness. (Perhaps it relied on movement as well)

Thanks Steve, yeah this is harder than I had thought lol, I've always prided myself on lighting ship's, but this one is supposed to be in near total darkness - yet still lit enough to see some at least - argh! That's a bugger! Well I have adjusted the lighting in WIP23 which I just submitted, I think it's a great deal better

I saw - and faved - that! I'm not sure how they managed it in the film, but I think many times there was solar atmosphere or some other element helping to silhouette the ship. Also, I think it actually was quite dark, and the ship revealed itself as it moved through frame.

I remember the back side of the huge main shield had all kinds of small lights highlighting the framework - but I need to see the movie again... Hey, there's an idea!

Thank you Steve! For the insight as well Yeah, when I do the main shield, it throws a tremendous amount of light into the scene. (jeez - can you imagine the size/brightness of some of those lights on the main shield???) I remember around the boosters the lighting was pretty bright. They never really showed lighting 'fixtures' other than brief views here and there on the 'people' section of the ship, but I am putting each and every light into it's own fixture so that the shadows thrown are better, as well as the visibility. I even built small swivel headed floodlights for this project too lol!

Oh yeah about the background shots throwing some of the sun action in there... I still have not decided how I am going to do that

I wonder if an HDRI sky-ball might work? I've tried making HDRIs from a series of images (from dark to very bright) using (I think) HDRI Shop or something. It worked out pretty well - I was able to use the image(s) to light a scene.

Lightwave has some interesting cameras, one of which can render out a spherical projection from inside a 3D scene. Also, it can save images in EXF or HDR format. You might be able to generate a "space sky" with gaseous sun elements that are very bright. I don't know C4D all that well, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has a similar capability.

Sorry, just "thinking out loud" - er, uhm, make that typing out loud!
