Yeah... I guess... Soft images are limitations of the lenses. I enhance all of my photies to pull out the detail, not necessarily to change the image. Just makes them more crisp and clean. Why not download GIMP and play with image editing? It can be great fun! Try some tone mapping too, it'll enhance the colours making the photo more vivid.

We work only with L series lenses, but they are still soft. It is just one of those things. What camera body are you working with at the moment?
