Description

Over at GameArt HQ , they’re having a Nintendo 64 20th Anniversary Tribute – I grabbed Perfect Dark as it’s probably my favourite game of the system.

I wanted to draw protagonist Joanna Dark (shown here) in some awesome fighting pose, but then remembered that giggling about ‘Dual Cyclone Technology’ was more fun (referring to the Cyclone weapon), so I wanted to make it into 60s style advert. Then I got side tracked somewhere and made it into a pin-up – eh, it happens.

Joanna was quite the opposite of a sexualised character, in fact she was a great example of female leads, but a girl wielding dual automatics with a wink was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

Inspired by the great KOF2002 poster!

Very well done. Or should I say... "Very professionally done my dear" this has to be the best fanart I've ever come across despite the sexy theme but this time it's beyond justified XD

Thank you! I'm really glad you like it! Yeah, the sexy element appeared by chance, it wasn't planned - but glad it came out ok

She's lovely. Nice use of shadow and highlights. Her expression is quite nice.

Excellent artwork!

Probably because of the infamous butt-pose!

I thought the single player had potentially interesting characters and setting that wasn't quite used to their full potential (more notable limitations of the N64 next to the PC which could flesh out the characters and settings in System Shock 2, Half-Life and Deus Ex?). Also the GoldenEye game was deftly emulating a solid and popular Bond film.

The less said about the Xbox 360 sequel the better...

Yeah the sequel didn't live up to it.
From what I understand of it, Perfect Dark went through many iterations and lots of staff left during development. That would explain some of the odder parts of the single player story, but the game is still solid in my opinion

^That puts Rareware's decline into perspective and why the sudden halt to genuinely good Rare games after Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day, plus Microsoft's apparent hollowing out, with Banjo Kazooie's Nuts and Bolts being the only reasonably solid post Microsoft buy out game in all that time till this day.

Also the character voice acting (while immersive enough when fighting dataDyne mercs and NSA operatives) was pretty cheesy, wooden and amateurish, when video gaming production in the early 2000s was transferring over to hiring competent veteran voice actors for Western and Japanese animation.

And there was already a steadily growing pool of more mainstream C-list to B-list Hollywood performers hired for video games, with A-listers like Samual L Jackson doing voice work for GTA San Andreas just four years after Perfect Dark (which had stilted voice acting that sounds very dated and laughable like the voice acting for the first Resident Evil game).

Perfect Dark's level design and addictive game play for its Single Player alone was still very decent though and was ahead of its time in most respects.
