Well, here's the final piece!
It was quite fun doing this, even if it took a while to emerge about the image:

tools used: 3dsm9 & cs2
work time: ~2 days (without rendering time)
scene: 14 mio faces, 3000*4000, rendered with brazil

I used a plugin called 'greeble' for the main part of modeling. The skyhoppers were used from [link]

Update: I added two fireballs to the scene. They were made with AfterBurn plugin for max. The explosion still looks a bit weird, though. I like it better in hi-res, but doesn't matter...
Update: Made the rain visible in mid res and tweaked some with the fireball
