Who said he would be dead. He was on the surface for two years so they couldn't have him growing up in front of all these people. They would have aged him until he was old enough and then stopped it, though I'm sure that it would have some serious consequences for his health in the future. You might notice that in his death scene the girls hands look quite smooth so he might have had a premature death.
