Your way is a face proportions. But not just proportions... You need the anime face proportions. You have to do it strictly. It's complicated.

The problem is. The eyes are very close to each other. Mouth is very high - and chin seems very large. And the whole face is compressed. The nose also should be moved lower.

But I would recommend you to move the nose a little bit lower.

I think you are right, Im having problem on facial, I have to rework on those parts. Im in an odd situation, while I like to go with anime style, I don;t like how it minimizes mouth and nose, I want it to have things that are sticking out on the face, yet don't want to make things too real.
