Whether it was intentional or not, they did a pretty good job hiding the answer. In the movie, the one and only time Toaster is ever referred to indirectly is when they're going down the waterfall. Curby asks, "Where's Toaster?" Lampy reply is "(S)he sank!". Yes, they managed to cover his line up with enough sound and music so it's impossible to decipher (and you can't count on closed captioning since they're always getting their stuff wrong). I even tried to watch the Mars sequel (aaaugh) and at one scene Toaster says something, but then Radio chimes in with a comment; one of the Martian appliances turns to another and says, "He makes a good point!" But was that appliance referring to Toaster or Radio?? They never say. @_@;
But ah-well. Toaster's fine being ambiguous. ^~; S/he has a lot of qualities that would be suited for a boy or a girl and to have a definite answer would ruin the memory a lot of people might have of this character. ;Þ

Huh… I could imagine a movie like that. For me, some of the "death scenes" in the first movie were just as haunting as those in End of Evangelion. ~.~
