Hey, my username is relevant again! Kinda.

My redesign of Ultra the Multi-Alien is subtle, but one of my favourites. By just rotating the convergent point and moving it to his chest I think it takes him from a pure camp character like Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man to a character with some intrigue. Plus, it avoids awkward questions regarding Ultra’s presumably horrifying geometrically segmented xeno-genitals hidden behind his combat tighty-whities

As for altering his backstory, the whole getting hit by four transformation beams from four different species is too contrived and awkward, while the rewrite of him being an engineered experiment is too generic. I think a happy compromise is in order. What if Ultra is the result of four aliens getting caught in some sci-fi explosion that fuses them all into one being? We could make it so his personality shirts periodically between the four personas and, to add some melodrama, two of the personas are bitter enemies. Which I guess would make him a they.

I came up with this reboot when trying to think of a nemesis for Cyborg that wasn’t just another dude in hyped-up tech. Ultra fits the bill with their eclectic blend of biological superpowers that gives them the arsenal to go up against Cy. I know I said the multiple personality thing is overdone in my Volthoom post but I think it nicely mirrors Cy’s own uneasy relationship with the Fatherbox that lives in/is his body. The interesting story hook for the character is that Ultra switches between helpful or neutral personas to hostile ones, making them both the villain of the week and the special guest superhero ally.

Here are my ideas for the different alien personas and their corresponding power sets, but I am very open to suggestions:

Lord Rythe: Represented in the left half of Ultra’s face, Rythe is your classic mad scientist. It was his invention that exploded and fused the four aliens together. His species is telepathic and can overpower the wills of some creatures.

Aze Arn: Represented in the left arm of Ultra, Aze is Rythe’s heroic foil. From a species composed of energized plasma, Aze chased Lord Rythe across galaxies to stop his dastardly plans. His unique anatomy allows him to fire bolts of plasma from his hands and it was one of these bolts that destroyed Lord Rythe’s machine and caused the previously mentioned explosion.

Laroo: Represented by the like entire bottom half of Ultra’s body, Laroo is Aze Arn’s slightly hapless assistant, who is understandably distraught by his current condition. Similar to how Victor likely feels, Laroo just wants to get his old body/life back and does not want to get involved in anymore of Rythe’s and Aze’s shenanigans. His species has lil’ ankle wings that enable them to fly.

Trago: Represented by the right arm and side of Ultra’s face, Trago was an unlucky lab rat at Lord Rythe’s lair. Trago’s species is comparable in intellect to a gorilla or chimpanzee, so he is mostly just confused and upset these days. His species has super strength and elasticity.
