Description Take 2 has been updated on the previous.. but i decided to make this a new deviation, since it deserved it.

Vray DOF, high quality GI, rose convertable to low poly without detail loss
materials were very hard to figure out
Thanks to ~theederv for pointing out SSS

For the people who missed something, read my journal.
I think this is more like the rose she deserves

Looking good! Teach me, teach me! I wouldn't even know where to start on something like that.

The leaves look a little glassy to me.

I'm just at a loss for where to start basically every model. Well, unless it's a box or a ball. Then I'm all over it!

rofl , you have to start with the most basic shape in a model , and choose a primitive in the shape of that, then just model with poly edit
i started with the petals, made them pivot around the center, andthen ust made one, altered, turned, next one, etc

So what did you start with for the petals? A box? Sphere? Plane?

started with a box, 5x5x2, shape it, then subdivide with nurms

I started modeling that last night. We'll see how far I get!

Any other objects you can recommend trying? I haven't used Max in so long...this is weird! How do I get back in object mode after I convert to editable mesh? Or should I not do that? I'm such a noob.

you cant go back to object mode, in object mode you need to do everything you need to do, then make it an editable mesh/poly (tip: use poly at all times! much easier!! )

flowers are relatively hard, try chess pieces! they all cover pieces of max such as lathe, editable mesh, etc..

Hm ok, will do! Now to find some reference! I need to find some beginners tutorials too. My school has a video tutorial series for Max, but it is like idiot level. I'm half way through the videos and they're just now getting to importing image planes....which they talk about for 20 minutes and it's like 3 clicks.

In Maya you can go between editible mesh and objects with a press of the keyboard. Though it goes crazy if you go back in and raise the divisions or something.

thats why they disabled that in max

Reference.. hmm.. google?
and those video tuts.. yeah lol.. i dont like video tuts :/ theyre slow and boring

I found one. A little too hard to try it while at work, I'll pick it back up tomorrow. Would you recommend the line/lattice route, or just starting with a cylinder?

4G0NY In reply to 8-8 [2006-08-03 18:11:10 +0000 UTC]

Whatever suits you its just a preference, i would probably do a spline for the totally round pieces, and cylinder for pieces with extrusions etc.

I put what I worked on in scraps. It needs a lot of help, but I'll probably just redo it. The second one will look even better than the first! The fourth one will look better than both of those. I don't know what the hell happened to the third (I was in the future and I saw it).

its, nice how the head of the rose is kind of squashed as it rests on the ground, so it looks more organic, maybe its just me, nice job
