i love how this came out, its very well done. Since you are wanting to improve, theres a couple things that might help you out...
when youre working on the layers remember that you can mask out the areas that yuo want... like one thing i think i see is that when you darkened up the background it did a little bit to the figure as well? the layer that you did that darkening with can be masked out around the figure, so that layer will not "appear" there.
that would help lighten it up a little bit.
could also try making a new adjustment layer > levels and just up the middle tones a little bit... and then again using a black brush to mask out the areas you DONT want to have lightened (like around the figure but not he figure itself)... that will let the figure have that lighter tone, while leaving the background alone.

this is really beautiful. the woman blends in with the dark background very well, but this is a bit hard to see. some lighter tone on the woman might help, but even without it, this is gorgeous!
