Chapter nineteen

As Inuyasha finished his story Katherine turned to the blades.

“These are the knives that belonged to Katsu?” She asked.

Inuyasha nodded.

“I know him to well to know he wouldn’t let go of these blades without a fight.”

Inuyasha looked down fearing the worst. Katherine looked back up at Inuyasha.

“Did you ever see him again?” She asked.

Inuyasha nodded.

“He tried to visit every summer. He became my first good friend.”

“Can you tell me more about him?” Katherine found herself asking.

“Why are you so interested?” Inuyasha spat at her. Katherine simply narrowed her eyebrows.

“Because I am the only one here that has gotten possessed by them, and I want to know why.”

Inuyasha stared at her for a second annoyed at her sudden confidence. Kota, and Aimi stared at her also surprised at her mood change. Inuyasha finally sighed giving up.

“Fine, I might tell ya.-” He stood up and made his way towards the door.

“-When I feel like it.” And with that he left the hut.

Katherine said nothing slightly annoyed at his stubborn behavior but was happy that he was at least considering it.

“Please forgive him. He doesn’t like talking about his past.” Kagome said looking out the window as she watched her husband walk off to think.

“I understand.” Katherine said with a small smile. Kagome smiled back. Katherine then turned back to the blades still on the floor. She picked them up and slid them back into her bag.

“Would It be ok If I kept these with me?” Kagome nodded.

“Inuyasha will probably not want to look at them anyway.”

Katherine gave a half smile then looked at the ground. She jumped when she heard Kota gasp. She turned her head at him to see his ears twitching frantically, He quickly stood up.

“Shippo’s awake.” Aimi jumped up at the name and the two ran out of the hut. Katherine quickly followed. Kota and Aimi ran into the hut Shippo was resting in to see that he was sitting up right grabbing his head.

“Shippo!” Aimi squealed running up and hugging him. Shippo jumped a little not expecting the sudden welcome, but soon hugged her back with one arm.

“Hey pipsqueak.” he said.

Aimi giggled and let go.

“Same as always. lighthearted no matter what happens.” She said wiping away tears of realife. Kota walked up next and sat down next to him.

“You almost gave everyone a heart attack.” He said smiling.

Shippo smiled back and proceeded to act smug.

“Well what would life around here be like if there wasn’t a little excitement here and there?” Aimi punched him in the arm.

“Oh shut up.” She said jokingly.

Shippo smirked. He was about to say something to her but then caught sight of someone in the doorway that made him freeze. It was Katherine. The light behind her made her look like she was glowing a little. It was enough to make Kota turn and stare for a minute too. Shippo finally smiled realizing who it was.

“Hey Beautiful. Miss me?” He asked.

Katherine blushed not expecting the “warm” welcome, but soon smiled back. For some reason she wasn’t as nervous around him as she was when they first met.

“More than you know.” She said sarcastically as she walked in and sat down next to him.

“Didn’t get into any trouble while you were away did you?” He said raising an eyebrow.

“No, but It seems like you did.” She said looking up at his bandages on his head.

Shippo raised his hand and felt the bandages.

“Yeah, seems like I did.” He suddenly remembered the events of the evening and looked around the room.

“Wheres Kimiko?” He asked looking worried.

Everyone went silent and they almost simultaneously looked down. Shippo’s eyes widened a little.

“What happened?”

“Well...She sort of had a meltdown and ran off. She thought Katherine was the reason you're hurt.” Aimi said. Shippo looked at the ground, his smile had faded.

“Its my fault.” He said.

Everyone stared at him amazed. It wasn’t like Shippo to admit he was wrong or he was defeated.

“What do you mean?” Katherine asked.

Shippo’s teal eyes looked up at her but said nothing. Slowly he stood up stumbling a little to the right but Aimi caught him.

“Shippo!” She said.

“I’m fine. I just need to find her.”

Kimiko was sitting on a small grass hill far from the village looking out over the meadow and trees below. Her eyes had dried but red tear streaks still stained her cheeks. The wind blew gently against her face and hair. She slowly closed her eyes trying not to think of anything, trying to just relax and imagine nothing had happened.

Shippo quietly pushed through the bundle of bushes and trees looking for her. When her finally found the clearing he saw her sitting there motionless. He stared at her for a second then slowly made his way over to her. He stood next to her for a second then sat down. She didn’t move but she knew he was their.

“Kimiko.” He said.

She slowly opened her eyes but didn’t look at him.

“...I’m sorry.” She said quickly.

“What?” He asked.

“It’s my fault you're hurt.” Shippo stared at her for a minute before she spoke again.

“It didn’t ever occur to me that pushing you in might hurt you. I was being really stupid.”

“Kimiko.-” Shippo said trying to stop her but she kept going, Tears started forming at the corners of her eyes. She turned her head further away from him as she started yelling.

“I hurt you! Then I tried to hurt someone else!”

“Kimiko!” Shippo finally grabbed her and turned her toward him making her look at him.

“I’m not mad at you!”

Kimiko stared at him, her eyes wide.

“I honestly don’t blame you. After what I said about you and being too independent...I deserved to be pushed in, and besides, You saved my life by pulling me out.”

Kimiko was speechless. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Shippo let go of her and looked away.

“Kimiko, I know I’ve been a real jerk in the past, and I will probably still be a jerk in the future. But I want you to know that I will always be you friend, and I’ll try to be their for you whenever you need me.”

Kimiko was now having a hard time believing Shippo was really their saying these things to her. She wanted to pinch herself to see if she was dreaming.

“When did you become so mature?” She finally said.

“What do you mean, I’ve always been mature!” He said.

Kimiko lifted an eyebrow.

“Since when?” She asked with a smile.

Shippo’s face twisted in frustration.

“Since always.”

Kimiko smirked.

“Whatever.”

Shippo nudged her, She nudged back harder. They started to go back and forth just like they did when they were kids. Soon the nudges got softer and softer until they were both just leaning against each others arms. After a moment of silence, Kimiko rested her head on Shippo’s shoulder.

“Thank you Shippo.”

Shippo stared at her for a second then smiled.

“No problem.”
