I be thinking of the Archie comics with the toes thing then.

Ooh, I never paid attention to how Archie did it.  But I think it was because those comics "Americanized" the Sonic characters by giving them more proper "anatomy".

Me thinks the lack of toes is because to save on used polygons and lower the texture use to improve/increase frame rate of the Dreamcast games hence the possible confusion by the animators. Plus, saves time on the animating.  Plus I think the lack of toes would make things difficult on moving.
