Description
Out of three attempts, I've finally completed the entire challenge! I never bothered to update daily on here in case I didn't finish like the past two years so here's my compilation for the whole month. To mix things up, I decided to go in a fanart/oc/fanart/oc pattern. Below I'll post my thoughts of when I posted these daily to my tumblr and facebook. Enjoy!- Day 1 [Ring]
No garantee I’ll be fully commited to Inktober this year but the first prompt was too good of an opportunity.
- Day 2 [Mindless]
I decided this year, I’ll be going in a fanart/original/fanart pattern so I wouldn’t have to pick and choose between my characters and my current interests. So today we have my zombie boy, Jeffrey.
- Day 3 [Bait]
When I think of bait, I think of worms. And when I think of worms, I think of Earthworm Jim. Seemed like a perfect setup.
- Day 4 [Freeze]
Cid and Krail for this prompt. They’re out looking for Jeffrey, who mysteriously ran off into the woods (from prompt 2). It’s a cold, October night and Krail isn’t taking it so well.
- Day 5 [Build]
I’ve been in a Mega Man mood and when I saw ‘build’, I thought of robotics and Dr. Light. I was originally going to draw Rock for this, but I always draw Rock and Blues was his first son so I gave him the spotlight. Added in some wires to fill up negative space.
- Day 6 [Husky]
This one is kind of a stretch, I didn’t want to just draw one of my bigger characters so I took husk as in corn husk for my character Sewcraft, or Scarecrow Kid as I usually call him. He’s making little husk dolls. When you’re stuck in a dimention with only miles and miles of field, you gotta kill time somehow. Not counting his more disturbing sewing habit.
There are crow feathers cause this world is overlooked by a giant crow who kidnaps children, he’s a whole other story.
- Day 7 [Enchanted]
I was torn for this prompt, it was either going to be Enchanted Towers from Spyro or the Disney movie Enchanted. Against my better judgemen, I ended up going with the Spyro idea since the cartoony style of the game seemed to fit in better with all the other art for this year.
Love these dudes, they were some of my favorite npc’s in Spyro 3 and with the Reignited Trilogy giving them coffee, it gave me that sort of cozy autumn vibe.
Pablo just wants to enjoy his coffee but he walks out and hears fighting in the distance.
- Day 8 [Frail]
An origin story for Rob, my Christmas-themed slasher villain. He came to me in a nightmare years ago abd I made him into his own entity.
Rob is a porcelain soldier who was created back when toys still had souls, in a small village in the mountains. But for whatever reason, he became a subject for bullying by the neigborhood kids. One day as Rob was taking a stroll around town, one of the boys came up behind him and kicked him with such force that Rob’s glass eyes came dislodged from his head. He was never able to retrieve them.
- Day 9 [Swing]
This prompt really threw me for a loop, I didn’t want to just draw characters on a swing without it being some kind of reference so I went crazy with this one.
We got the Real Monsters trio goofing around in the junk yard, taking turns using Oblina as a swing. She’s been used for other props, it’s totally not weird. Well maybe it is, but that’s just how they are.
- Day 10 [Pattern]
I went with sewing pattern for this one.
Origin story of a character I never got to use from an old series. This is Stitches, an abandoned teddy bear belonging to troubled protagonist Bridget. She buried him in the backyard of her childhood home, finding him too creepy and having hallucinations of him moving around. Now at 17 and living on her own, her living doll companion Kove thought it’d be a smart idea to find him, fix him and reform him to be his fighting partner. The result was disasterous.
- Day 11 [Snow]
Went straight to Happy! season 1 for this prompt. Always wanted to draw these two in black and white.
- Day 12 [Dragon]
You guys get an early one today cause I stayed up through the morning to try to fix my sleep. Even went through the trouble of redesigning this guy only to have a zoom on the main subject oops.
This is the villain of the very first series I ever made, all the way back in fifth grade. In the old canon, he was an evil wizard with a pet dragon. In the new adaptaton, he IS the dragon. He can shapeshift into his other form at will when he needs to be seen as a threat and do some real damage.
- Day 13 [Ash]
Vampires and sunlight don’t mix. I was a bit worried about this one, I haven’t drawn Bunnicula in a bit but I think he came out alright. Really digging the light contrast I was able to pull off here. Don’t worry, his arm can grow back.
- Day 14 [Overgrown]
This is Phototron, my plant-based super hero who goes through a redemption arc right from the get-go. He has moments of regret from the way he was in the past, at times consuming him like vines.
- Day 15 [Legend]
Legend Quest this time! I’m proud of myself I was able to get the whole group in this shot. I tried making sure the ghosts have a white outline around them but it’s a little hard to see. They’re about to set off on a new adventure.
- Day 16 [Wild]
I honestly didn’t know what to do with this at first, today marked an ‘original art’ day and none of my characters came to mind until I worked around it. I have two rabbits that are wild animals, but that isn’t really creepy. So I took it a step further and have them fighting a wolf. Though Peter and Floppy are not brothers by blood, Peter will lay his life on the line to make sure his ‘lil bro’ is safe.
- Day 17 [Ornament]
Didn’t think I’d be drawing Open Season art but here we are. I like Elliot though, we need more deer rep in cartoons.
When I see the word ornament, I think of Christmas but I didn’t want to do that for Halloween, then for whatever reason I thought of hood ornaments for cars. In the movie, you first meet Elliot tied down to the hood of a hunter’s truck just before Boog lets him loose. He would have been a living room ornament if fate wasn’t so kind. I don’t know the first thing about drawing trucks but it was good practice and I hope I gave a vague idea of what was going on.
- Day 18 [Misfit]
My spider knight Spirk seemed like the perfect fit for this one. He was genetically enhanced with human dna, giving him sentience, posable thunbs, and the ability to speak and process emotions. But because of the experimentation, he sometimes feels lost whether he should be more spider or more human.
The human part of his brain deems him a misfit. He’s embarrassed of his second pair of eyes and often hides them under his helmet. Yet he still fights for the people who shun and fear him, in a world he doesn’t understand.
- Day 19 [Sling]
It’s about time I did some honest Whiplash art. This is your attack mechanic in the game, you literally sling Redmond around like a wrecking ball and bust the place up. Due to experimentation, Redmond is covered in some kind of hair tonic that strengthen’s his fur against damage so he’s mostly fine???
- Day 20 [Tread]
This is Roxxie, the mysterious zombie girlfriend of my other zombie character Jeffrey. She often finds herself wandering aimlessly at night, never to leave the graveyard, waiting for her boyfriend to return. None of Jeffrey’s friends know about her. At least not in the beginning of their story.
- Day 21 [Treasure]
A double meaning prompt because Spongebob himself is a treasure, at least to me. I like to go heavy on the ocean aesthetic whenever I draw him in an environment so this prompt was a lot of fun.
- Day 22 [Ghost]
Ana and Loneliness from ‘Negatives’, a series conjored up by me and my friend Jake. Though Lo is not really a ghost, she has ghost-like properties, being an entity that lives inside Ana’s head who aids her in times of need.
- Day 23 [Ancient]
This one is kind of a stretch, but Gex does have an ancient Egypt level and I have yet to draw him for any prompts, this year or previous years. I wanted him to originally pose like the pharaohs on sarcophaguses but Gex is like a bird, he doesn’t look right when you look at him head-on. So I had a little more fun with the pose. It’s not Gex if he isn’t a little sassy.
- Day 24 [Dizzy]
Bridget, the protagonist from an old series I wrote as an angsty teen. I’m not too thrilled with this one, I really should have planned the pose out better. The idea is that Bridget is dizzy due to blood loss and she’s trying to stay conscious.
Bridget has it rough, she’s a target for getting attacked with or without Kove.
- Day 25 [Tasty]
I’m sorry my last two oc days were kinda heavy, here’s Casper trying to eat BooBerry cereal. It’ll literally go right through him but he’s doing his best.
- Day 26 [Dark]
A lot of my oc days have been figuratively dark already, so I went with literal darkness. This is Molly, a character from a creepy chldren’s book I wanted to write years ago. It wouldn’t have been unique or interesting but I still draw her and her cat entity for illustrations. I had a lot of fun drybrushing white acrylic around the light source, gives it a sort of glowing effect to it.
And with this prompt, I’ve made it farther officially in inktober compared to any previous year I took on this challenge. I have five days left, wish me luck!
- Day 27 [Coat]
I wasn’t sure what to do for this one until my friend Star/Spark suggested I do something Inspector Gadget related. So I drew him with his niece and dog tucked in his coat.
- Day 28 [Ride]
Wasn’t sure how to make this prompt slightly creepy until I decided to go with a chase through the woods, Sleepy Hollow style.
These are my characters Jay the pery (short for peryton/winged deer) and his jackalope friend Bramble. Jay is racing through the woods with a hungry harpy hot on their trail with it’s eyes set on Bramble. Bramble seems to have the worst luck with things trying to kill or eat him lately.
This was a little tricky to pull off with the perspective and I nearly forgot Jay has a bird tail with talons for his back feet, but I love the result and glad I was able to pull this off.
If these two had voice actors, imagine Elijah Wood trying to keep his cool while he has a panicked Danny Devito on his back haha.
- Day 29 [Injured]
Mao Mao is getting in way over his head again and his friends are trying to stop him before he gets hurt even worse.
Mao Mao’s proportions are honestly kinda hard to draw, but I managed to get that dynamic pose I wanted. Had to get sort of creative with the blood this time since I couldn’t make it black.
- Day 30 [Catch]
That is probably the worst hand I’ve ever drawn but I’m rolling with it.
We have Navin today, a mute firefly and Spirk the spider’s partner. He always ends up being the damsel in distress in their encounters with villains, which is both equally annoying and terrifying. There’s a comon misconception that Navin and Spirk are the size of normal bugs, oh no. They’re human-sized if not bigger and they fight giants. It’s all because of their genetic meddling, they’re the only two of their kind.
- Day 31 [Ripe]
The last day!!! I can’t believe I made it, I finally finished an Inktober challenge all the way through. Will draw a celebratory doodle for the final blank space later.
Coco and her older brother Crash are out picking wumpa fruit. It seemed like a really nice fall idea to end off this month.
- Finale
My final send off for Inktober. This was the first year out of three attempts where I finished the month and I’m quite proud of myself. I also had a blank space where I’ve been drawing the prompts so why not draw this out.
All characters belong to their respective owners.
