Description
This is something Newton and I created this morning to make a point about consistency. This is primarily targeted at those who make decisions about the efforts of others, admins, moderators, critique writers and such. I'm hoping, if nothing else, it will encourage some to pause and think about it. I recently had a deviation refused by a literature group (nameless to avoid drama) because it "didn't fit" into the literature genre. The post was a picture of a scale model and the text was a description of how I've used scale models and maps to improve the quality of my writing (the actual post can be found here: 914four.deviantart.com/art/Hyl… ) by using them as spacial references. I was told: "Thank you for considering us, but we accept literature only." To be certain, I asked the admin (politely of course) if they were aware that it was a post about literature and writing techniques. The response I received was. "Oh, I do understand - it's just that if we begin to accept everything related to literature that's not written prose or poetry than we would be everywhere, more chaos and unorganization than a pure literature club, which we are proud to be." I was satisfied with that response, it was polite, concise, and entirely civil, so I put the incident out of my mind. I would have completely forgotten about it, except that the very next day the group hosted a deviation that was all about posting a selfie image of yourself on with a hand-drawn sign declaring that you are real. Perhaps I'm clueless and simply don't understand, but I fail to see how said post has anything to do with literature. I'm not upset or anything, and I won't reveal the group, post or admin to protect their privacy, all that I'm saying is that consistency is important; when we begin applying different rules to different people, we end up with strife. Hopefully this deviation will provoke some thought.
As to Newton, well, he enjoys having his picture taken, but by this point I think he was getting tired of the game (he doesn't like the flash, and we took about a dozen pictures, he kept hiding the card with his left paw); if he looks annoyed, it's my fault and not that of anyone on . I think the business card might have been a little sharp against his paws; when we were done, I let him keep it and he bit it repeatedly, eventually shredding it. For those who don't get the humour in the card, Newton is, in fact, a cat, but we often wonder if he realizes it. He tends to behave more like a human child than a feline.
Lastly, while most of my photographs are available under the Share-Alike CC licence, for what I think obvious reasons, this one is not intended nor licensed for modification or artistic re-interpretation.
You can send email to Newton at SirIsaacNewton@thekentauride.com. How many cats do you know who have their own email address? (actually he never reads it, I have to deal with his backlog!)

As of yesterday, I have spotted at least two of those deviations on dA ...
... b-b-but ... literature???? you've gotta be kidding, right?
Man oh man, you just simply have to submit this Newton statement to the group! I would love to see how they respond to that.

Well, the point of this deviation was to provoke thought, not conflict or argument. Posting it to the group in question (I believe that's what you are recommending?) would only make the group admin angry, and that's absolutely not my goal. It wouldn't hurt to tell people about it however, so that future admins and critique writers might stop and think if they are applying the same rules to strangers as they are to their friends. A group founder can do what they like with their group, that is their right, I am only saying that if they are going to have different standards for different submitters, they should make that information public and not waste people's time. Soap box anyone?

You are right, of course. ^^ Guess I am like the bulldog that I have been likened to ... once I get my jaws around something, it's hard to pry me loose! ^^

I fully understand, and there are times I admit I may overreact in similar situations, but I'm 6'3" and have had to learn to restrain my impulses to avoid... well, let's just call them social misunderstandings and leave it at that.

One of the most dangerous men I've ever met was barely 5'4", so I've learned that size isn't always relevant. The issue is that the gorilla typically has to be more aware of his surroundings when he stretches than the chimpanzee. I had a summer job delivering flyers one summer, I think I was 15, and this one house had an aluminium door in front of the main front door. The mail slot was behind the aluminium door. It never occurred to me that they would lock the door that gave access to the mail slot, so when it resisted I just pulled harder and pulled the whole door frame off. There was no body home so I told my boss, and I suspect he never called them. I still feel guilty about that.

Yup. A few weeks later, when I realized that my boss wasn't going to do anything about it (if he did he never told me), I tried to find the place again, if nothing else just to apologize, but I think he purposely kept our team out of that neighborhood. A couple of weeks later school started again, and I never did find it.

Absolutely. I suspect that may be why I did so much volunteer work for the Church in the few years following that.

Thank you
I figured I'd done my part with the first deviation, and besides, Newton enjoyed this; he's sitting on my lap as I type, purring like a muscle car
