Pretty interesting. I especially like the amulet hanging from her belt. What is it? I'm curious.
Speaking of curious, I don't see anything in the picture or description that would tell me how she figures into Ravenloft. I'm really curious about that too. What's the backstory?
Making the blade really curvy is a nice touch. Lends it an exotic flair.

Thank you for the comment.
The amulet is for protection, a superstition. She was not made for Ravenloft, had never heard it when Mists of Ravenloft requested to have this picture in their gallery. As I was flattered I of course agreed to let them. She is a character of my own comic I´m working to create and I can not really give any backstory at this point since it would give away the plot.
I try hard to make my characters exotic in some way but it´s not easy to be original in this place where so many skilled artists from all corners of the world converge.

Yes, exoticism can be a challenge in this kind of environment. Here is what I recommend. Build the society first. What is their environment? What are their needs? What are their resources? Who are their friends and foes? Create a more fully realized place of origin, and exotic clothing and accessories should come more easily.

That is kind of what I´m working with. I´ve bought a stack of books on historical and ethnic themes focusing on art and culture, arms and armor from all over the world.
I focus of course on some cultures I find aestetically appealing. The bronze age culture of chinese shang and zhou dynasty, the tattoo cultures of southeast asia, jewelry of tibet and north africa, Russian, arabic and indian arms and armor from the middle ages are among the many inspirations I have. I also look to contemporary fashion and subcultures and my favourite artists.
From this I am slowly building my own cultures figuring out likenesses and differences and just trying to make them coherent.

Sounds like you are doing your homework! Excellent idea! Research can provide lots of inspiration.
In a shameless plug, you might want to look at this picture I had commissioned from Garth Graham.

Anthropology and history interests me anyway so I would get a lot of these books either way.
Have already checked that pic out, didn´t know about greenstone weapons. I´m a few years away from getting that kind of flow in my artworks. He is a professional though.

Where I got the idea originally was Deadliest Warrior. The show is often flawed, ridiculous and often as not flat out wrong. However, it is an excellent source for weapon designs.
Yes there are pictures of the weapons but I can also get reference pics of people USING and HOLDING the weapons. Does wonders for giving artists a sense of scale and how the weapons should be used.

I´ve seen a bit of Deadliest warrior and I agree in much of your assessment. But if you want to see how to hold and use different weapons I recommend you tube. When it comes to weapon designs I recommend you find a weapons encyclopedia, they are often rather cheap. Old chinese martial arts movies is also an excellent source, some really crazy weapons show up every now and then.

Well, part of the reason I go with Deadliest Warrior is I have Netflix. It's super cheap to take screen shots when I stream it. Everything you mention works too.
