The Frankenturrets are not always twins in everything. The shyer of the two in this case was dragged to singing practice by her more musical sister.This was a secret santa gift for the Tumblr folk.

Did you start with a darker background then worked your way lighter? Is that why you say "carving it out", or was the statement due to difficulty?

Here . I'm glad I didn't delete these right away. This is an example of how I paint. I make some sort of background, pull up a few refs then layer on some color. THEN (and you're not supposed to do it this way,) I figure out how the character aligns with the vanishing point and them place them where they make sense. For the cube turret, I felt like I was assembling it. I had to know how the cube part fit the machine parts in it. That's why it felt like 'carving' I guess.
