Sonic stared at the flashcard, completely stumped. Anxious... and embarrassed, he began to tap his foot and drum his fingers on the desk. He looked up at the tiny, little rabbit sitting across from him and shook his head. "Pass." He said.

"C'mon, Mr. Sonic. You can do it. Just try really, really hard."

"I don't know the answer. Let's just do the next one."

"Please, Mr. Sonic. Just try."

Sonic took a deep breath and glued his eyes to the card again, trying so hard to remember the last two days of lessons. He couldn't believe that this math thing was still so hard to grasp. Weren't tutors supposed to make learning easier? As far as Sonic was concerned, signing up for a tutor had been the worst thing he'd ever done. He still wasn't getting it.

"I don't know, Cream." He insisted. "Pass. Next card."

Cream stared at the blue hedgehog with sympathy and understanding. "Take a guess, at least." She pried.

Sonic's face grew red with embarrassment. "I've guessed on all of the cards so far, and I've only gotten three of them right! Three! Out of twenty!" He swiveled around in his chair and turned his back to her. "It's bad enough that I have to go a tutor. The fact that my tutor's only half my age just adds insult to injury... I'm never gonna get this stuff."

Cream was hurt. Not because Sonic had hurt her feelings by raising his voice, but because he wanted to give up. And that was something she had never ever seen him do. She set her jaw.

"Don't say that!" She shouted. Her shill screaming hit Sonic's eardrum and made him glance over his shoulder at her. "You've never given up on anything before! You can't let a few math problems stop you!"

"But I--"

"You didn't give up all those times Eggman threatened your friends and family! You didn't give up when Chaos threatened to destroy the planet, or when the A.R.K. was hurdling towards earth!"

Sonic sat there in silence, half believing that this kind of talk was coming from someone so young.

"You've overcome a lot of things. Things much harder than algebra, or geometry. I believe in you, Mr. Sonic. You can't give up just because it's hard. And even if you fail... at least you tried."

Sonic swallowed the lump at the back of his throat. He was humbled. An emotion he didn't usually feel. He turned his chair back to her and nodded. "You're right. No one's ever said of me that I didn't try... even when I did fail to do something. Okay. I'll try one more time."

Cream held up the same flash card from before, and smiled at him. Sonic stared at the card and then at his hands as he did some small counting on his fingers. "Seventy...." The hedgehog and the rabbit met eyes before Sonic hesitantly finished his answer. "... five...?"

Cream smiled, and they both rejoiced as she placed the card face down with the other three cards Sonic had answered correctly.

I know how Sonic feels. When I was a senior in high school, I had a hard time with math and needed a tutor. My tutor wasn't a third grader, but even so. And to this day, I still struggle with certain subjects in school.

I was thinking about the classes I was struggling in the other night when this headcannon popped into my head of Cream tutoring Sonic. Helping him so that he can pass the math final and stay on the track team next semester. I also love the idea of Sonic doing anything he has to to pass. Even go to an eight-year-old who's really good with numbers.
