Description
Zoom in and enjoy the details! This huge project took well over a year to complete, and I would sometimes only intermittently work on it while occupied with other projects. Now, finally, it came together over the last couple of days and I'm quite satisfied with the result. Background lore: beset by internal strife and turmoil, the nascent Republic of Man, the successor state to Serevin's Empire, sought to consolidate its popularity and power with a massive offensive against the Argell of the northern Mithaneans. The goal was to open up pathways for settlers through the mountains, alleviating the overpopulation crisis of the western provinces of the nation and annihilating the arch nemesis of Man. The 9th, 13th and 14th Legions were called upon to execute the campaign, with the politically appointed general Cerdis lu Damignon in command. While the series of advances were successful at the start, they could not keep pace with the mountain climate and winter soon brutishly battered the human troops. By midwinter, the situation turned hopeless as critical mountain passes froze and the legions became trapped far beyond the reach of plausible deliverance. Then, the Argell, with support from allied human tribes, counterattacked. In this illustration, the doomed 7th Regiment performed its legendary rearguard action that allowed most of the 9th Legion to escape from the trap. While decimated down to a handful of men, the brave sacrifice of colonel Angewiel (pictured on horseback) and hundreds of others saved thousands from death. The 13th and 14th Legions were less fortunate, annihilated far from home and hearth. General lu Damignon was executed for treason, although his role in the disaster was exaggerated for political purposes.Β

Once again a modern army learns that superieur firepower does not help one a lot when in close combat. That the enemy whields blades longer than you, only adds insult to injury...
Interesting that the Argell have human allies; guess the Republic of Man is not popular with all Men. Are there any non-humans with the Republic or are they to xenophobic for that?
Great art and interesting story, please make more!

Hello Phaidros!
Thoughtful comment, and indeed that is the sort of mindset I went into this project with. The Republic of Man does not include all Men, but is located on a fertile geographical hub between human civilizations to the north, southwest and south. There are only sparse populations of other races living within its borders: the Urren, who are a shorter and hirsute mountain folk inspired by fantasy Dwarves (but not quite that short), and another "hidden" and magically talented race which walks amongst Men. The Republic is xenophobic by necessity, if wars were not fought against other races, Men would turn on each other, and that would result in the collapse of their united realms.

Thank you, the story is from a universe I've worked on for a while, hopefully, if I can stop procrastinating and take some actual writing courses/do some writing, it will beΒ from a book at one point
