Description I've been getting a lot of feedback from upperclass men that my method to design isn't going to produce good design. A lot of people here feel that there isn't any art is in design. Are they right? Am i putting emotion and thought into too much of my work? Should i stop? Are my designs really that unsuccessful?

has my allowance to add this deviation to their gallery.

I thought about the relationship between art and design the past few days and wrote an article on my blog abaout this topic too.

Your design fits well into this topic and because of that I linked to it: [link]

Hope that you enjoy it!

I can see how others would think your work is too "trendy" as it does certainly lean toward those tastes. I don't think that borrowing from those trends is bad, just realize that they aren't the end all be all and maintain quality framework in your works. blahblahblah. Some of the most compelling stuff does come from throwing convention to the wind though, classic and contemporary. :V.

so you're the guy behind that vici business, eh?

Design is a form of art, I think. It's just art with a purpose, a message, that the audience can understand.

As far as what people said about your work being too trendy, I kind of have to agree, sorry! Not that I don't like it, but I saw your comments to spillingtuesday and your design really is suited for only one area. Not that I'm an expert or anything (I'm only a third year student myself), but it might be beneficial to look up other design movements, particularly Swiss design. Maybe some more work with grid systems might help?

I really like this one, though. Although I did start reading vertically and got confused XD

I like your art but I see why 'upperclass men' would say you don't have enough art in it. Lots of other graphic desginers put a lot of brushes and stock and stuff in their work but you have it a bit more simpler than that. None the less, simple is good sometimes and you do simple well

What? xD They say that my work is too trendy, not that i don't have enough art in it. In some ways they mean that i have TOO MUCH art, and that i can't fulfill a commission because of where my design is direction toward.[Music Branding and such.]

Most professional graphic designers use no brushes haha, and take photos themselves.

well i think ppl have already said what needed to be said about art and design... but yeah, your stuff is good! and the further you can break away from the clutter of the usual advertising design, the better i think

Well, I support my thoughts about design versus art on the functionalism theory, it says that things should be done to acomplish the function they are made for, if they do; then beauty comes as a result.
As a designer or visual comunicator that's exactly what we do, we have to first comunicate, and if that goal is acomplished, then our work is "beautiful" or "artistic" or whatever you may call it.
On the other hand, Art (and I do not wan't to hurt anybody's feelings) does not has this rule as a base, and that's why a splatt of paint on a canvas can be considered as art lately, supporting on abstract statements.
So don't worry if your work does not looks "artistic", worry when it does not "tells" what you want to say.

Personally I like a lot your work because it looks like you said, that you make what you want, but it looks clean, simple, comunicates and is well executed, and that's what design is for.

f*@K them!! this is one of the BEST use of creative design i've seen in a while!

i seen it and it was one of those first glances where i knew what it said but i had no idea why. . .it's because this is art. .it's a way only true artists can read and comprehend.

F your senior class...they're obviously commercial minded people... and that's it.

I like this reminded me of a graphic art course I took you see things others don't and bring to to a point where others can see that itself is an art

tomasbrechler [2009-04-16 08:16:52 +0000 UTC]

its pretty tricky with art and design i dont think you can divide them clearly... of course design usually represents something that is meant to be used, art can be only for eye's pleasure

aanoi In reply to tomasbrechler [2009-04-16 08:24:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I agree, I don't like when designers feel that design isn't art though D:. They seem to be completely cut off from it's art roots.

MCMXCIV [2009-04-16 07:48:18 +0000 UTC]

IMO, art and design are ALL about the thought behind the piece and what it's trying to portray. Obviously with other mediums it's a different story, but as long as you feel your designs mean something, then you shouldn't care what a couple of people think. It's your emotion, your heart and your design. So don't stop designing, because I love every single one of your works.

This piece is no exception either, I love the concept behind it and the execution is spot on.

oh, this is awesome
it looks great

mmh... that's a tricky one anyhow...
Art and Design are just different in one thing: what they stand for. Art stands for itself, while Design is for people to 'use' it.
i don't know if that gives any help to you, but i really enjoy your work, and maybe there is just more Art in it

aanoi In reply to pica-ae [2009-04-16 08:19:11 +0000 UTC]

pica-ae In reply to aanoi [2009-04-16 08:24:29 +0000 UTC]

yeah, of course, it would be terrible without Art
maybe for design, the point is to know where to stop the art... ah, it is tough

CTRLgs [2009-04-16 04:37:22 +0000 UTC]

Art and design go hand in hand. I think a design that has emotion and thought put into it is a successful design, don't let people opinions change your vision.

(btw, this is great)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aanoi In reply to CTRLgs [2009-04-16 06:17:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah certain people are telling me that =] I find that the more unexperienced designers are the ones that are so without emotion. They learn a little bit but than only use that.

This is sick. I love everything about it really. Yeah the layout works really well, i've been trying to do something typography based for a while but haven't been able to conceive anything imaginative enough to do with the text to make it interesting

As for the suits trying to bring you down, the great thing about design is that it can incorporate essentially anything you like. Art can be a huge part of it or not at all. That said, sometimes you really have to tone down everything and make something boring and plain, but strong design-wise. It all depends on the client i guess.

I always separated my deviantart stuff from my commission and university work because the latter two don't really reflect what i really enjoy making. I guess you just have to wear two masks at times.
