You can really feel the pressure the skin and bones and fat put on each other, and watching it unfold in this step-by-step version is so, so cool.
The cold, delicate lighting is used to great effect too.

Your early process is so interesting. It creates such a unique painterly effect. I only use about 2-3 brushes in my works and they don't use any color effects. I have yet to experiment with textured brushes in such a way that it varies the colors before I even begin to define shapes. Normally I vary the colors as I get more into the small details.Β
Either way, this piece is my favorite from your gallery. So much drama and emotion. It's only after looking at the process that I notice her head is lifted. I always assumed it was bent forward in a distorted sad way.

step 1 looks strange... they start the painting from this?.. Anyway, nice to know.

Your process kinda trips me out in the first frames, almost like if you saw a figure in a shape like a concrete wall, took a photo, brought it up on your computer and started blocking out what you saw Pretty cool! The model does not look very healthy though o.o

I dont understand you first steps. Are you just trying to get the contour exactly as in the references?Β

Yeahhh kind of. I am trying to separate the two largest shapes to define the overall silhouette and shape of the figure. I place all my basic colour tones down first and then separate the shadows and light in their most clearest form. Helps form a strong base before i plot any smaller details or landmarks.

your contours look so tight as if they were traced (I know you obviously dont have to do that )and I always wonder if you just fiddle around with it until you get it so close, because that seems kind of unnatural way to paint (at least compared to the block in painting style) I guess your contour base is like a gesture only without anything aside from the main contour. thanks for the answerΒ

No problem at all!
Usually it does need tweaks after i have made the main silhouette but i do it from eye and just try to get a roughly accurate shape. In this case i used the lasso tool and just selected all the negative spaces and painted into the selection
