How do you achieve the wavy, glitchy look in the beginning? I know It's not fundamental for the finished piece, but I do like the effect it achieves.

Hello. Aaron, you have really outstanding sense of style.
I'm just a very beginner artist and I'm wondering how you did this value study? Did you make your repaint from colorful photo or from black-n-white? I've done some repaintings of the old masters' works but firstly I had converted them into black-n-white.
