Description
A Chaitya Hall I built in Minecraft. What's a Chaitya Hall? It's a type of early Buddhist temple built largely in India. They're cut into the side of a mountain and serve as a place for prayer/ritual during the monsoon season. If I'm right they're long and contain a stupa at the far end.
This Minecraft version has all of them. From the lion-less Asoka pillar in the front, the little pool in front of the entrance-way, and the umbrella capped Stuppa at the far end. The Stupa itself is even seven layers thick, much like the World Mountain (a concept borrowed from Hinduism).
The symbol above the entrance way is the wheel of life. The eight spokes represent SiddhΔrtha Gautama's (The Buddha) eight teachings on life.
The Umbrella is done in yellow and white. White being the color of learning, knowledge, purity, and longevity. The yellow on the edging being of rootedness, renunciation, and earth.
Yay for symbolism!
Project built on the ECF server and took the course of several days and much attempts at being precise with TNT. My TNT bombings soon shown me that the hill I was building into wasn't as tall as I originally thought, so I ended up just building from within, then covering the finished structure with smooth-stone and dirt. Then trees were planted on top and I declared it a job well done.

Wow, that looks pretty cool! I never really understood the appeal of Minecraft... do you just build things?

Build things, mine things, and occasionally fight off monsters at night (or when exploring caves).
I think the appeal of it is its simplicity. You can really make anything out of it. You're given a pretty much near infinite sized world and as many combinations of things to build as your imagination allows. It's like playing with Legos but on a much larger scale.
The game's also pretty flexible mod-wise and Notch (the maker) is working on making it even easier to mod. So if there's something lacking game-mode or content wise it's not all that hard to find something to fill the gaps. Re-skinning the game is also really easy.
