Augustus was Caesar's adopted son and heir when Caesar was assassinated by the senate. Gaius Octavius (Augustus) died of illness unrelated to Caesar forty-years after Caesar. But since then the "names" Caesar and Augustus became honorifics for emperors in the Roman Empire; as both were also deified as gods after their death (Divus). In the later Empire the emperors of both halves of the Empire would adopt one or the other; Caesar in the west and Augustus in the East.
