I really like the eerie shine off the surface, it makes it look half metallic half organic in a very alien and scary kind of way.

oh... when I saw the film, I presumed these were meant to be an alien species of some sort, it is obvious that thier role in the story took place much farther in the future that the rest of the film, so may I ask exactly what their 'specialty' is? if you were informed?
