Ya know, I see far too many immature people who, when brought to task for being a pugnacious little punk, say "It's the internetz! Quit being a pussy or get off it." I say, "It's the Internet. Be a decent citizen of it and the world it represents or GTFO." Seriously, being a total jerk on the internet doesn't make you look witty or cool. It makes you look like someone so pathetic and craving of attention that you will take the negative attention and revel in it rather than having to actually work to gain respect.

Agreed.

Also, saying "Get off the internet if you're getting cyberbullied" is a codeword for "Go kill yourself you wimp".

You're not asking for politeness or courtesy, you're trying to run the world. Not unlike those companies that try to get anything they have special rights to removed from YouTube channels they don't have control over.

How about if you can't be civil in a community and be a decent human being, YOU get off the internet? I hate to tell you, the decent people who actually built the internet were here first. Trolls came after. And I know this because I was online before there WAS an internet.

I can't stand people who use the internet as an excuse to be jerks. It's weird, I know someone who is a quiet nice guy in real life but on the internet he acts like an arrogant jerk who thinks the world is out to get him so he speaks in insults and bashes everything. If you don't act that way in real life why would you want to act that way on the internet? That's more of a rhetorical question since the obvious reason is because they can't be harmed online by their rude remarks, in real life they would regret acting like that. Sorry had to vent a bit. I love the stamp and agree with it

If it were up to me, all trolls would be revealed for what they really are: horrible people.

....They would then be brought up on stage so everyone could throw tomatoes at them.

While it's true that it is the internet, these are still real people you're talking to, or arguing with, etc. They still have beliefs and morals, so treat them with respect.

It kind of is. I mean, if you come onto the internet, a place notorious for people speaking ANYTHING on their mind, and you come in unprepared, you have no one to blame but yourself.

But who says it's okay to just rampage around with no regard for other people? It's not really the way decent human beings should act and that's the whole point.

Aazari-Resources In reply to DJ-Bleach [2013-02-12 08:35:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh, but it CAN change. People weren't this bad before they started disconnecting from each other and connecting to technology more. It's a product of a lack in face to face socialization and empathy.

To anyone who has ever stated the quote shown in the stamp above:

yeah. It's the internet.

but stop and think of how many kids a year attempt or even commit suicide due to cyber-bullying.

do you really want to be responsible for a suicide...?

to me, it's almost the same as murder.

especially when you tell them to "go die in a hole"

even if you didn't mean it

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

ThornedDream In reply to Aazari-Resources [2013-02-12 16:40:02 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! It's no different from saying it to their face! In fact, it's worse. At least when you're saying it to their face you can throw in a humorous tone, which will let the person know you're only joking. But on the Internet, there is no such thing as tone...

ElementalHybrid In reply to ThornedDream [2013-06-06 19:25:28 +0000 UTC]

HappyPenguin819 [2012-02-20 00:49:13 +0000 UTC]

Agreed! Some people always uses the "this is the internet" card to harass and ruin the life of another person online and doesn't give a fuck about what is correct and what isn't, is not something that you simply must shut down if it upsets you. The internet is nothing but a media to communicate with other people but with the potential to make someone (in)famous easily.

👍: 1 ⏩: 0

Diloshstar [2011-08-14 12:29:08 +0000 UTC]

That's very true.

A good friend of mine got harrased by people on internet and when he told them to stop it and he's feeling sad because of them, they said him "It's just internet. Whatever happens here stays here.". But they don't even know that if they talk to people on net like this, they could be sued and have various penalties.

I mean, I think it's not right for people to get offended by a picture they see unless it insults their values, religion, self, close ones etc. In these cases, I can really say "Grow up. It's the internet.". But in a case like my friend's, it's just wrong to say it.

Colbatros [2011-08-12 16:24:33 +0000 UTC]

The only time you can use that excuse, in my opinion, is when someone becomes extremely offended (AKA butthurt) over something you drew, wrote or said that wasn't meant to be rude or anything.

Or people thinking every single thing you say on the Internet is always 100% true.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

DeckardX08 [2011-08-12 16:04:17 +0000 UTC]

True. The internet "bravery" does not worth a damn. Those who think that extreme rudeness will makes them "cooler" in fact only show such pathetic losers they are.

👍: 1 ⏩: 0

PiGirl13 [2011-08-12 15:01:33 +0000 UTC]

So true. I'm actually fed up with people thinking the Internet is some kind of game, and social interactions are only "real" if they happen in person. Communications over the Internet are the same as any other kind, you're just not looking at the person you're talking to. Would someone be rude on the phone and then defend it by saying "It's a phone conversation! Get over it or get off the phone!"?

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

Aazari-Resources In reply to PiGirl13 [2011-08-12 17:40:58 +0000 UTC]

I think the problem is that the internet involves a total disconnect with the humanity of the people using it. If you're communicating only by text, there's no face, no voice to give a connection with other people. It becomes viewed as impersonal and "not real". From there it devolves into "I can do what I want because it's not 'real'".

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

PiGirl13 In reply to Aazari-Resources [2011-08-12 19:36:27 +0000 UTC]

You're probably right. That's why it's so important now, with the widespread use of the Internet, for people to be able to base their actions on pure logic, i.e. knowing you're talking to real people, over the impulses of their psyches, i.e. things not being real if you can't see the people involved.

Thanks for the llama, btw!

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

Aazari-Resources In reply to PiGirl13 [2011-08-13 02:37:01 +0000 UTC]

That would require people being able to think logically. There are a frightening number of people on the planet right now who aren't capable of logical thought.

Yes, it is not an excuse. I started using the internet in the late 90s and I found that most internet users were respectful back then. Today, I think there are more rude internet users. How sad. I'm guessing this thing is somehow related to the modern social networking tools the internet has today?

SF-Production In reply to hirokada [2012-06-17 13:21:04 +0000 UTC]

It could also be because humanity has devolved. That's always a reason for why people act disrespectful these days too.
