Description
Ilia walked up the stairs. She had brought some soup for Link. Ilia went into Link's room and froze. Standing on the bed was a wolf and it was looking right at her. The wooden bowl clattered to the ground and the warm, orange liquid spread onto the floor.Without thinking, Link ran for the nearest window and jumped through. He didn't know what was going on, but he knew he couldn't stay in Kakariko. He ran at full speed towards Hyrule Field and didn't stop until he came to a small cave, where he rested and tried to gather his thoughts. He was a wolf and he had no idea why. He had no way of turning back into a human except for Midna, but she was in the Twilight Realm. Ilia had seen him as a wolf but didn't know it was him. Without really knowing what he was doing, Link stood up left the cave. The one thing he did know was that he had to get as far away as possible from Kakariko village, and there was only one place Link could go.
It was raining. Hard. In about five minutes Link was soaked through to the bone but he still pushed on through the storm. Link's fur was heavy with the rain but he didn't stop even though his left leg had gone numb with pain and every single muscle in his body was screaming at him to stop. Lightning crashed down in front of Link and he would have been fried if he hadn't swerved to the left.
He was breathing heavily when he finally reached Castle Town and he rested a moment to regain his energy. Hiding in the shadows, Link slunk around the capital of Hyrule. It was quiet and only a few people were outside. 'They're probably all in their beds, just like I should be.' Link thought with a sigh. Then he heard footsteps approaching. Staying close to the wall, Link listened to the soldiers on their night patrol.
'Oh, man! I hate having to patrol when it's raining!'
'I know, I'd much rather be in Telma's Bar.'
'I'm sure we had to patrol last time it was raining. Why can't the other soldiers do it?'
'Yes, it would be nice to relax in Telma's Bar, but if everyone did that then there would be another attack and then where would we be?' Link was about to walk off and try somewhere else; the guards were clearly as useless as they had been two months ago, when he heard something useful. 'But Princess Zelda's at the bar and we can't exactly protect her if we're not even in the same building as her.'
Zelda was at the bar. That was exactly the kind of information Link needed. Silently thanking the complaining soldier, he waited for the guards to pass then ran towards Telma's Bar. He climbed onto the crates outside and into the bar. He looked down, careful not to be seen or heard and searched for Zelda. It was hard, the small bar was packed with people trying to get out of the rain, and Link could only see the tops of their heads. 'How am I ever going to find her from up here?' Link groaned to himself, and then he noticed a sort of warmth coming from his left hand. He looked down and noticed that the Triforce mark was glowing. That was good. The Triforce only usually glowed when it was near another bearer of the Triforce. Link scanned the crowd of heads trying to pick out Zelda's light brown hair and almost fell off the rope he was balancing on. Link regained his balance but too late. Someone had seen him; Link felt someone looking at him and looked down into the blue eyes of the princess of Hyrule. Zelda.
Zelda's pale blue eyes widened in amazement; balancing precariously above her on a rope that she had never even noticed was Link. But why was he there? Zelda had neither seen nor heard of the hero since they saw Midna depart into the Twilight realm two months ago. But not only was he in Telma's bar, many miles away from his home in Ordon in the middle of the night, the blue eyed hero was in his wolf form. The princess blinked a few times and pinched her arm but Link was still swaying gently above her. 'Link…?' she managed to whisper, still not able to believe her eyes. The soaked wolf nodded. Zelda walked towards the door, Link couldn't be seen like this, it would only cause panic and he would be attacked.
Link carefully turned around on the rope and crawled slowly back outside. He jumped onto the wet ground as the door to the bar opened and Zelda came out. She was wearing her brown cloak and the hood was up.
'Link, is that really you?' the princess asked. Link nodded and lifted up his left paw to show the Triforce mark.
'What are you doing here; I thought you went back to Ordon. And why are you a wolf?'
Link shook his head, as if to say "I don't know" and hoped Zelda would understand. Luckily she did.
'Well, in any case you can't be seen outside like this. Follow me.' The princess led him up the stairs and towards the castle, or rather where the castle used to be.
Zelda pushed the huge gates open and followed Link through. Link couldn't believe the sight in front of him. Where the majestic Hyrule castle had once stood, now was a pile of rubble and crumbling brickwork. He had seen the explosion from Hyrule field after Midna had teleported Link and Zelda to safety but he never thought it was this bad. He noticed Zelda had walked further and was examining the floor as if looking for something, Link padded over to her.
'Here it is.' Zelda muttered to herself as she pushed a pile of bricks to the side. She wiped away the dust covering the floor and Link's blue eyes widened as he saw a trapdoor in the ground. Zelda lifted it to reveal a staircase leading down into a large, underground room. Link looked up at the princess questioningly, Zelda nodded and followed as Link slowly made his way down the stairs.
The room was quite big and appeared to have been carved into the ground. It had bare walls and was lit by moonlight, which shone brightly through small holes in the ceiling.
'This place was made by my ancestors, in case the castle was ever invaded and the royal family needed somewhere to hide. I would have used it when Zant invaded but I hadn't known about it then.' Zelda explained. 'But, that's not important right now. You're a wolf and we need to turn you back to normal but we don't even have a way of communicating, so what are we going to do?'
'If I knew, we probably wouldn't be here…' Link thought angrily.
'Well no need to take it out on me, Mr. Hero! Wait, what?!' Zelda exclaimed.
'She heard me?!' Link thought.
'Link, what's going on?' Zelda asked nervously.
'No idea, but I've learnt that the less you question things the more you understand.'
'How does that work?'
'I don't know! You think people being able to read my mind happens a lot to me?!'
'Well, at least we can communicate now,' Zelda sighed. 'But what are we going to do about your little problem?'
'Only one thing to do!' Link thought to Zelda. The princess waited and looked at Link. Link stared back.
'You don't know, do you?' Zelda asked, with an exasperated look on her face.
'No, but there's probably only one way to get me back to normal.'
They stared at each other for a few minutes, each waiting for the other to think of something. 'Got anything yet?' Zelda asked, after a couple of minutes of silence.
'Yep!' Link thought.
'Okay, what have you got?'
'Fleas.'
