I'm sure they've case studies & control groups in place before the medications are prescribed. Can we fault insufficient data? Do the doctorts receive incentives for prescribing them?
I can only speculate.

Yes sure, they have a lot of randomized controlled studies to prove the efficency of the meds - they all funtion. But there are almost no studies on how to discontinue to take them and I encountered a lot of peolpe and patients who were taking the meds *forever* because they couldn't cope with the side effects of decreasing the dosage or who were even hospitalized to make it possible to decrease the application rate... was kind of shocking for me x.x

Discontinuing medication isn't lucrative for pharmaceutical companies. A drug dealer ensures a profit by addicting others. I suppose I regard them with suspicion, but, I'm cynical.
Truth is I've been on two antidepressants -- though not for several years. I weaned myself from them, & experienced peculiar side effects as a result.
What's more is I majored in psychology, but that feels like a lifetime ago.
It seems I'm divagating. ...Again, your deviation contains a wonderful concept, & it brings to light a most important & consequential issue.

I enjoyed this piece as well as the conversation it struck up. I agree with your statements. I must say however, that I myself am currently on medication to help alleviate the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
I haven't been depressed for... almost two years now. I am still quite anxious however. When I discussed weaning off of the meds, my doctor said she was nervous I would become even more anxious. I am very anxious as it is, but I am on the highest possible dose. She said bring it up next visit and we will discuss it then.
I think Canada's health care is a little more safe then most, seeing as it is paid for by the government. And although one may have reason to be weary of pharmaceutical companies, the doctors get paid the same, no matter what they perscribe to you.
It really was a phenomenal piece on a currently universal theme.

I wouldn't dare encourage others to wean themselves as I did. It was a reckless measure on my part. My symptoms were situational... when I found direction & changed my path, the medication was no longer necessary.
Moreover, my psychologist was an impersonal man; I was quickly disgnosed (an quickly prescribed).
How did you come across this deviation/comment? LoL

My doctor is far from impersonal. She seems to genuinely care about her patients and is in no hurry to wean me off my medication. She listens to my concerns carefully, and discusses all decisions to made with me, so that I am fully aware of what is going on. My symptoms are also situational. My mother and her irrational, obsessive behavior has an extremely negative influence on me. My doctor admitted that if my mother would go on meds, I wouldn't have to.
I get around

There w have another thing in common only my final thesis is standing between me and my Masters-Degree in clinical psychology now ^^ and during all my internships i experienced a lot of constructive use of medication but a lot of abuse of it too... for example the medication was changed not because the new meds were better but because they were cheaper (for the hospital - not the patient...)
I fear now I strayed a little...
so thank you again for the awesome feeback and sharing your thoughts!

I've been collecting those for some time now from everyone I privately know who takes them. And since I worked as a clinical psychologist in a psychiatric hospital for a while I stole the empty boxes there too...
