With this picture the question on how to improve it is really a question on how far you wanna take it since it contains so many elements.
I believe you should focus on giving the four foremost knights, the griffin and the horned beast more detail, clean up the artwork a bit to make them pop a little more. Maybe also three or four of the foremost spearmen. These are after all the most dramatic points of the composition. Vooboos analysis of the castle is also correct. It appears as we see it slightly from above when it should be from below.
As for the composition as a whole I think it´s good, your use of colour is wonderful. The only thing possibly worth changing is the mountain to the right, maybe to change it into a hill with a softer incline. As it is now it looks far too steep for the spearmen to make a charge from and the griffin looks a little bit like it comes magically appearing from the mountain wall(at least to me) .
In the end you yourself must feel where your limitations currently lie. A battlescene like this is a migthy undertaking to say the least and might very well drive you crazy as you put it. I must emphathize that I am no master myself, if you want just check out the modest works I´ve produced so far. I´ve just tried to analyze to the best of my ability. This is really my kind of picture and I would draw some myself if I didn´t feel it´s still a bit too hard for me.

This is beautiful and I am really not good at critiques, but i think the perspective on the castle is off. It draws my eye away from the griffin, which i believe is your focal point. Your colors look phenomenal, as well as the collision in the middle right bottom. This reminds me a bit of The Allegory of the Outbreak of War by Peter Paul Reubens in the flow.
