Description
May 15th, 2015: Another updated picture! Boy, I seem to keep doing that this week. XDAaaaanyway, I was in the mood to practice my forest silhouettes so I decided to rework the forest in this picture. I was unhappy with the forest the first time around because it was too dark and complicated, and it drew the eye away from the cat. So I lightened it up and simplified it down, and now it works much better as a backdrop to the cat. *nods*
I also desaturated the volcano because it was drawing attention away from the character too.Β So, hopefully, your eyes should be drawn to the character much more now than in the original.
Note to future self: everything is subservient to the focal point. If something doesn't work with the focal point change it. It's silly to change the focal point around to work with a background.
"The amount of chaos one can create with a little magic and a magma chamber is amazing."
Finally finished! This is a commission for Latei that has been long in the making. It's of her character, Monster Cat , as she runs away from a volcano that she probably totally started.
This was the first time I've ever done anything with volcanoes, and the first time I've done more stylized dual-lighting like this. It was a challenge, for sure, but I think I learned something from it. It was hard to keep the focus on the cat and not have *too* much of it stolen away by the GIANT volcano in the background, haha. XD
Special thanks to Tidma for helping me out with the composition, Shadow-Wolf for her tip on cat noses, and both GoldenDruid and LittleFreckles for helping me out with the values too.
I hope you like it!

The warm ornge and cool blue contrast is absolutely stunning!
Gorgeous texture work as always and great job on getting that neutral colouring in the forest background.
I love the tilted horizon canvas as well! Beautiful

This looks really, really awesome!
I love this combination of the warm/hot volcano and the cold cat-fella! These two different parts just go so well together!
That was the first thing I've noticed...and then I saw the composition, which is awesome as well! The huuuuge volcano in the background, the leafless trees, ashes falling down everywhere...looks really cool and apocalyptic. :>
Then, the cat fella. Amazing job! The anatomy is really neat and I just can't stop looking at the face! Such an awesome shape and details! The glowing eyes and the gem are really awesome too...I'm such a sucker for glowing stuff.
Lastly, the dual lighting. Well done. Just, well done! It's perfect and it looks great!
That challenge went well...
Amazing picture!

Thank you!
The hot and cold lighting was a challenge, but I'm pretty happy with how it came out, especially considering that it isn't my usual lighting or color style. Pulling it off took a bit longer than I wanted, but it was certainly a nice learning experience. I'll probably make more complementary pictures like this in the future now that I understand the process. ^^Β (Though I'll probably reverse it with a warm focal point and a cold background since that seems to be much, much easier to pull off, haha.)
Oh, and the cat actually has three eyes. I know it can be a little hard to tell since she doesn't have any pupils or anything (that's what the commissioner wanted) but, yeah, they're three eyes. Whooo~

Β Turned out SOOOO GOOOOOD! Β You just kept making this better and better I think you really have to experiment to find your way as an artist, and I see how you're practice has definitely brought improvement! Β Can't wait for your next painting!Β

Aw, thanks GD. And thanks for the feedback and words of encouragement while I was working on it too. It really helped keep me on task.
The final colors look a little dull to me though (they looked better in PS) so I'll probably come back to it later on and rework it like I did with the other commission. I don't know if all these errors means that I'm improving, or if it just means that I'm being too anal, but I hope it means something good!

UGH THIS CAME OUT SO SO WELL.Β I love red/blue contrasting lighting SO MUCH I CANNOT you did it so well oh my god.Β And that volcano is GORGEOUS.Β I don't understand why more people don't draw them (myself included!!!!) because they're fire-spitting FIRE MOUNTAINS AHHHHH.Β
I also love the tilted canvas and all the detail in the trees and ALL THAT FUN FUR.Β AHHHH.Β It's blue in the front and red in the back and those glowing eyes are so. much. FUN. Omg yas such an amazing job!! You're really developing such an amazing painting style!!

Oh dude, how did I miss this comment? D:
Thank you so much! I have exactly a billion things to learn about painting, but I'll get there... someday. >___>
And I totally agree with you on the volcanoes. I wish that more people would draw them. There's just so much potential there for epic, EPIC paintings. Like, you could have rocks flying towards the characters as ash falls like snow. Seriously, doesn't that sound awesome? I mean, sure, it could be silly -- i.e. people running away from a lava flow that's moving 5 inches an hour -- but it could also be AWESOME! DO IT FOR THE AWESOME!

I'm trying to work with more complementary color palettes. It's a bit difficult while I figure stuff out, but I'll get it eventually.
