Description
Right now, I can hear you wolfaboos out there, sharpening yer steely knives (...I suspect that you CAN kill the beast in this case) as I make a point against one of the niggling little things that bug me about unpleasant wolf fans. "ZOMG NOEZ, WOLVES MATE 4 LIFE AND LURVE EACCHUTTER MOAR THAN PEEPLE DOOOOOO." Indeed, one of the key points that wolfhumpers make in their defense of this creature is that they are noble animals who mate for life. Naturally, such a wanky and fanboy-ridden reaction irked me so much that I had to see if it was true. And it wasn't!!! ...Well, sort of.
While it IS true that breeding wolf pairs tend to last for the lifespan of one of the wolves in question, it is rather significantly less romantic than you would expect. According to Wikipedia and (always cite multiple sources, kids!), there is usually only one extant breeding pair in each pack of wolves, and when one of the wolves die, another wolf comes in to take its place and reestablish the breeding pair quickly.
There is no love between these wolves, none of the romantic affection one would expect from those with monogamy in breeding. Black swans truly mate for life, and even humans have a legitimate go at it better than wolves; at least we have a mourning period after our significant others die. Indeed, the reasons for this small number of breeding pairs staying together is actually fairly pragmatic: limiting the number of extant breeding pairs by mating for an extended period of time keeps the population in a controlled, manageable amount, and a small number of wolves breeding can be reestablished easily if one wolf dies. No mess, no fuss, very efficient, and no love lost at all.
Here's hoping I just took a bit of luster off of the wolfaboos so that people can enjoy the badass creatures without all the damn wank. XP

You just gave the defenision of "mating for life". Just because a wolf died doesn't mean their mate is cheating.
Face it, wolves mate for life. They're not humans.

It really depends on wolves, but it is true that a lot of animals do not mate for life. Swans are more dedicated to their relationships than wolves are, if anything.

all animals??
*inhale
ever heard of dogs, cats, various birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, fish, rodents, and various other mammals? Not even all humans mate for life, so saying all animals mate for life is a little ignorantΒ
(and yes i do realize this is an old comment, just putting this out there for people who still believe that all animals mate for life)

How do they "kind of" do?Β
It's ignorant when someone fails to do research on the subject and assumes something which has been proven incorrect many times.
For example you said that all species kind of mate for life, however there are many species who will meet a mate, breed, and never meet them again, and when their children grow up and leave they get a new mate, repeat. (for example with most big cats, tigers, leopards, etc etc)
The same goes for red pandas and many, many other species.
Many species are also polygamous.
The first example also follows for most dogs, cats, some kinds of birds, some bears, etc etc
I don't understand how all animals mate for life "in a way"? Many animals are just the breed and never meet again type.

Mating for life is when an animal finds one mate and stays with them for the rest of their life, and if one of the mates dies, they don't get a new one, or they at least grieve before gaining a new mate. Elephants do this, I believe, and swans most definitely do.

Alright. I admit I messed up a bit. I'm not good with word definitions the way I am with animals in general.
But it's fine. I'd really rather not go further with this... ^_^

A lot of people don't know much about animals, I don't even know everything.
It's okay not to know everything, as long as one is always open to learning new things when possibleΒ

I'm still pretty sure they mate for life, unless their mate dies. And wolves do feel love to their mate. Not much, but I'm sure they feel some.
But the reason I'm commenting is, Wikipedia isn't a very reliable source. I get most of my information from books, national geographic and animal planet.

gosh people! I'm a wolf fanatic but their "mourning" period is actually confusion over where their mate is. if one alpha dies, then the beta takes their place! simple as that........

If it's shaving the fur off so that the Wolves don't have to pant all the time in the summer, that's good by me.

your clothes are made of sheep fur but is shaved and so their cooler in summer not of wolf fur and wolves. Defending YOUSELF IS NOT KILLING AN ANIMAL IF A DOG WAS RUNNING AT YOU AND WAS TRY TO KILL YOU KICK HIM OR CALL OR CALL 911 IF A WOLF WAS GOING AT YOU PLAY DIE

megadracosaurus In reply to wolves09492 [2014-10-15 08:06:52 +0000 UTC]
Wolves can't know if someone was heartless. Neither would they care. Wolves don't love each other in the way we do.
Yeah, that would totally work! As if the predator would immidiatly give up if you kick him! And its realy easy to call someone when something is attacking you. Genius, just genius...
If you are attacked by a predator and you can't escape or get help, its either you or the predator. If I was in that situation, I would Try to scare fight the wolf and, of realy neccary, kill it. Its you or them.
As for playing dead, That's just Retarded. Wolves are scavengers too. And they can smell wether something just died, or has been dead for weeks. If you play dead, your literally Offsrping yourself as an easy meal.

Wolves don't REALY attack humans and yea I would fight a wolf if it came down to it but not kill them at first sight I am not as fast no but normal people would carry pepper spry like I did when I went hiking just in cause some carzy man jumped out or a bear or wolf tried to hurt me I never had to use it on anyone and playing dead dose work like on bears u drop to the ground and cover your head with your hands and dare not move

Of course wolves attack Humans. Ever heard of the Wolves of Ashta? Or Candice Berner? Those wolves were man-eaters.
Playing dead is a common myth. Any predator with a good sense of smell or good ears would smell your alive and hear you breathing. Its literally suicide.Β
