I kinda thought of a similar scene with the character, Grady, playing piano, and Mr. Largo being moved by how beautiful it sounds. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LAxkY⦠(skip to 1:15 for the sentimental part)

It's all up to interpretation! (: (The Slits isn't in my personal taste, but that's just me!)

I really like this idea that Ruth has a hidden talent that no one, not even Laura knows about. Ruth has been in the series now for over 20 years and not much is known about her character aside of her turbulent relationship with her ex husband and she has a teenage daughter which allows fans to be creative and come up with interesting ideas about the character.
I agree with rds98 I could see Ruth singing βTime in a Bottleβ by Jim Croce. I could also see her singing βFire and Rainβ by James Taylor. Great song!

I love both of those songs! I love adding little bits and bobs to characters; since Pamela Reed is extremely involved with theatre, I thought that Ru could also be into some type of preforming art herself, but since Ruth is shy (at least that's the vibe I interpret from her), she keeps her talent to herself; it's her secret reprieve from daily stress.

Pamela Reed is awesome! So funny and I have seen her in interviews, I canβt listen to her voice now and not think of Ruth Powers. Also I think thats cool you are incorporating bits of Pamela Reed into Ruth, I mean they are forever intertwined.
I have been trying to find a way to create a fan art with Ruth saying to her ex-husband βYouβre not so tough, without your car are you?β That line in Kindergarten Cop still cracks me up to this day!
She is funny throughout that whole movie! π

Pam is a badass. She was HIT BY A CAR and still whooped ass. <3 I'd love to see her live one day. I've heard she's really sweet in person.

Lisa hears Ruth playing the acoustic and things "Oh my gosh! We can jam together!" and most likely runs off to get her saxophone.
Great picture!

(Lisa is sitting in her room, about to play her sax. She lets out a few notes, and stops when she hears angry knocking at her door)
Homer (behind the door): Lisa, turn down that stupid saxophone!
Lisa: But dad! I need to practice.
Homer: I need to watch the cliffhanger of Who ShotΒ J.R!
Lisa (annoyed): Dad, you've seen that 65 times! You know how it-
Homer (indignant): 64! Now go outside and practice!
Lisa: (annoyed sigh)
(Cut to Lisa going to the front of her house)
Lisa: At least the outdoors no one can judge my musical talent.
(She lets out a few notes on her sax, only to be hit in the head with an acorn by an annoyed squirrel)
Β (Lisa rubs her head and lets out an annoyed grumble)
(Lisa hears the guitar solo and what sounds like a beautiful voice, she follows the sound to her neighbor's house, she reaches over the fence and sees Ruth sitting on her lawn, playing her guitar)
Ruth:Β If I could make days last forever/if words could make wishes come true/I've save everyday like a treasure/and again I would spend them with you.
(Lisa lets out a joyful gasp. Instead of interrupting, she silently watches the performance with joy, feeling like she's found someone who shares her love of music)

Super cute! I especially love "Time In A Bottle". I feel bad that she was shooed outside, but in the end, she learned something new and exciting!

I felt it was in character for Homer (and maybe a little silly) to throw her out for watching a rerun of something he had seen dozens of times, and then be in character for her to be judged by nature itself.
Time In a Bottle is a song that brings out real emotions. And to me, it would be the kind of song performed that could be by someone who has encountered REAL pain.
Lisa, herself an outcast in her life, could really identify with this performance in a way that she couldn't identify with anyone else, except for the jazzman with severe gum disease.Β

Another thing I can add, is that Ruth's friendship with Marge has seemed to have dissolved. I can see Ruth feeling too guilty to approach Marge about it and it would be one of the things Ruth reflects on as she sings.

I don't think so. Both of them have their art. Marge has painting, while Ruth has music.Β

Looks like Lisa heard an incredible voice singing along to a guitar, and upon investigation is mesmerized by her neighbor's musical talent. A kindred spirit. ^^
