You know what I think was happening in this scene? I believe he was desperately looking for some fear to feed on ANY fear to save his life. So he could transform into what they are afraid of. But there was none. Not coming from any in the losers club. But he could feel fear present. His own. As he was having a eureka moment he says "fear" when he finds his own and turns into the the HE is afraid of; his own death.
