Description
Twilight (A pony) traveled to the mountains (on a journey) to watch the moon (stare into space) with her telescope (using a tool) while wearing her cosy and warm coat (suited).--- --- --- --- --- ---
For Equestria Dailys Newbie Artist Training Grounds III, Day 30: "Draw any previous theme/Draw every previous theme"
As I missed the first four days of the NATG it was clearly necessary to make up leeway. So here we have the first four themes combined in one picture. Now I submitted to every single theme. Finally I can rest easy. Sleep, oh brother sleep. Would be awesome if there were a Luna visiting me in my dreams. Speaking of Luna: Wonder what Twilight is looking for? Well, I have some ideas. Don't know though which one(s) I will draw. Time will tell.
I didn't manage the mist in the valleys very well. But I like this whiff of color in Twilights coat and mane.
What else to say? A lot. Will be in the journal soon. After a few hours of sleep.

Thank you. Now that it's almost winter I have half a mind to draw something similar again.

Nice background and combination of themes!Β Did youΒ mostly use pencil for this or was there some colored pencil for the black and hint of color on Twilight? Either way I like the coat on Twilight, the miscellaneous items around her, and the background is far better than anything I could manage.Β The whole picture and its lack of color combined with the coat gives a feeling of winter and isolation which I actually quite like.Β I'm very impressed with the night sky in generalΒ and the shading around the moon is terrific.Β Great work !

Hehe, thank you very much! The halo actually was my biggest problem aside from the "ground". I wanted clouds to fill the valleys. And I think it would have looked better and more harmonious with a soft mist down there. It would also have explained why there are no clouds in the sky (as Twilight climbed so high that she passed them).
I used my standard pencil for technical engineering and the soft pencil mostly and a black pencil for the sky and some shading (and the telescope). And yes, I found some old color crayon that I used for Twilight. I thought about making her the only really colorful "object" in the picture, but decided not to overdo it. After On the clock I realised that I can't reach good levels of black with a normal pencil, especially not in huge areas. Still though it needs a lot of time to achieve such results.

This looks very beautiful! The shading is excellent, and it gives off a nice, wintery feeling as well!

Thanks. Unfortunately a look outside the window gives me a bit of a wintery feeling as well. ;D

Thanks. The black crayon I bought helps a lot here as it allows for way darker areas than the normal pencil. You can see the difference in comparison to On the clock where I used a pencil or side by side in And the winner is... everypony (Twilight with pencil, Fluttershy and Vinyl with black crayon).

I think the key to making convincing mist is to use zero lines except at the extremes and patches of clarity that let the terrain show through.
As to what Twilight's looking at, I bet she thinks Luna is trying to grow a clone army on the moon, but she can't convince anypony else of what she saw. And then it turns out she was really just growing eggplants.

Yeah, I started with very blurred mist (or clouds actually, I wanted it to be the clouds, did even forget about this in the comment >.< ) but it didn't look really good. So I added some lines and contours and then used an eraser. In the end I got to tired to try other things.
Interesting idea I have to admit, didn't think about that.

Thanky. I'm glad that the first four themes were so good to combine so I was able to draw this.

That is really neat and creative!
And I love the feeling you get from this piece: cool, quiet, and calm.
