Description When it comes to whacked-out, bizarro, effed-up belief systems, NOBODY beats the Aztecs. Mesoamerican cosmology in general is pretty much one big giant peyote trip (like seriously - these people were ingesting all sorts of mind-altering substances), but the Aztecs brought a level of insanity and bloodlust to the equation that is just top notch. If you ever wanna have some fun, go read about the creation of the fifth sun, or the birth of Huitzilopochtli, or the annual festival of Xipe Totec. That shit'll blow your mind.

Anyway, out of all the crazy gods in the Aztec pantheon, Tezcatlipoca is my favorite. He's a fascinating, mercurial figure, as likely to harm as to help - he can tempt humans into self-destruction, but he can also cleanse them of contamination, absolve them of guilt, and help them overcome fate. What makes him decide whether he's going to save your ass or throw you to the dogs? Who the fuck knows. His name is usually translated as "Smoking Mirror", and he's considered to be the embodiment of change through conflict. He is associated with a variety of different concepts, including the night sky, nighttime winds, obsidian, enmity, discord, sorcery, temptation, mystery, and beauty, and he is the traditional rival (and occasional ally) of the cultural hero of the Aztecs, Quetzalcoatl. Tezcatlipoca is basically the original Chaotic Neutral character - as evidenced by his awesome title, Necocyaotl - "The Enemy of Both Sides".

I decided to draw a modernized version of Tezcatlipoca, complete with a lit-up (kinda apocalyptic?) view of Mexico City, in place of the ancient capitol of Tenochtitlán. Tezcatlipoca is traditionally depicted with a black and yellow stripe across his cheeks and chin, and black paint over the rest of his body. I stayed true to his design in that respect, but updated his other features to look more modern. He's usually drawn with a smoking obsidian mirror in place of his right foot, but that gives off too much of a peg-leg vibe, so I gave him some obsidian-plated boots instead (we can just assume he's wearing a prosthetic under his boot). I also made the smoke plumes come from his entire body because, um, it looks freaking cool. Tezcatlipoca's animal counterpart is the Jaguar (Tez is a huge fan of shapeshifting, and the Jaguar is his go-to form), so I added some spots on the jacket. I made him super-sexy-fly because 1) I am the artist and thus have the power to draw hot guys, and 2) Tezcatlipoca was apparently such a fine piece of ass that he was able to seduce a number of different goddesses, so yeah. He's a babe. It's canon.

Acaciathorn, I love you.
Like way too freaking much!
I love anthropology! After my grandparents took my to Cozumel to see the ruins, my cousin and I have been obsessed with mesoamerican culture. I actually have a book on their mythology, along with other cultures' mythologies.
Have you heard the story about how Tezcatlipoca got Quetzalcoatl to sleep with his sister by getting him drunk? Great stuff, really.

I wanna go to Cozumel! And no, I haven't heard that story...myths involving alcohol are hilarious though.

Tezcatlipoca is really a fascinating little bastard.
I like how you gave him some of his more metaphysic features as well as a seemingly beautiful but dangerous appearance.
Very well done!

whoa! Trully an amazing job, and great research!
The "aztec" mythology is certainly my favourite, you describe pretty well how insane it is, and even though it is that way, I believe it has fewer conteadictions than many other religions, since everything that happens in those myths is a direct representation of a real fenomena, like sunrise and many other things in nature that amazed these people.

I really like how you did Tezcatlipoca, that look on his face is trully mischievous.
Also, beautiful painting of the city!

and yeah, I agree with you about the religion thing I find it interesting how religions, especially polytheistic belief systems, reflect the environment of the parent culture.

btw, did you read Jonathan Fast's The Inner Circle ?
In case you didn't, it's a pretty good supernatural thriiler with an interesting plot idea as to what Tezcatlipoca could do for modern worshippers… and in the end, the hero realises trying to fight a god is a little too much for him…
Tezcatlipoca is depicted as nicely Caotic Neutral although with a keen sense of his interests

Hey, would you mind telling me the plot of the book please? I'm curious to know because any book that involves an Aztec god is interesting to me lol and I couldn't really find any good info about the book. It seems to be harder than usual to find out the plot and stuff for this one.

Thanks.

a guy who hung around Hollywood trying to write for movies, without success in the 80s.
One day his movie star 'friend' ( who forgot about him since he became famous ) turns up in his flat, utterly terrified, saying "they"'re going to kill him…
He kicks him out, and the next day in the papers: famous movie star dies in a traffic accident.

He feels guilty so he noses around ( he's a freelance writer ) and discovers bits of clues that add with other bits that add with…

The reveal: the success of the Hollywood movie industry is based on a pact with Tezcatlipoca, whom some minor figure in the business met in human form on a trip in Mexico in the 1910s; the return being, a famous actor or actress is sacrificed every 10 years ( a make-believe accident, then drugged and sent to Mexico where the sacrifice takes place )
Well, the hero will prevent his friend's sacrifice, but you don't deal with gods THAT easily…

Dear lord what an interesting plot, I would like to check it out and read it, is it worth reading like did the author do a good job with the portrayal and everything?

I think so, yes. There's a great feeling for Hollywood and its backstage, and the hero's love/hate relationship with it. The hero has some guts but he's far from a superman, he's very likable I think and most characters are pretty cool. Although there are weaker elements too ( with the policeman, with the woman he loves but neglects because of his investigation… duh ). There are some smashing action scenes too.

Incidentally, Jonathan Fast is the son of writer Howard Fast so the book is quite openly left-wing. That's entirely all right with me but I don't know how you'd feel about it

Ok cool, I bought a cheap used copy on Amazon and it's completely fine with me if it's left wing.

Ha, that is awesome... i'm certainly no student of religion, but i did read Gary Jennings' "Aztec" at a very young age.  It basically taught me more than i ever needed to know about sex, death, rape, disembowelment, religious mania, etc.

A few weeks ago i heard a story on NPR detailing how all the glorious perverted insanity was steadily excised from the Bible.  We need a new 21st century hardcore translation that restores all of it.  Even the dick jokes.

Curse you, King James.

Acaciathorn In reply to Chronorin [2014-03-29 03:40:23 +0000 UTC]

Are you kidding me? Even the modern version of the Bible is overflowing with sex and violence. I mean, in the Old Testament there's rules about what you're allowed to do with your sex slave, and there are stories involving the seduction of fathers-in-law, and there are some VERY descriptive love poems...yeah. Also MOUNTAINS of violence and killing and genocide and all that good stuff. Aztec mythology is just a lot more umm...colorful and LSD-fueled than the beliefs of the ancient Middle East, haha

I can believe it. You know, peyote was the one drug I didn't try in college. I missed out on the Aztec madness.
And yeah, as crazy as the Bible is, it could still be crazier.
