Nah, in our RPG Teddy Lupin made a bargain with Death (or some entity purporting to be Death). He was led to believe that doing so would save everyone he cared about. Now we gotta rescue his dumb ass before he becomes the Grim Reaper permanently, since it's likely he was manipulated in some way, and his sacrifice isn't necessary.
(The rainbow crystals consuming his skin relate to how he met Death in the first place. It's a long story).
