Description I did this back in the spring, and never finished it. It's the first (and only) drawing from a ref photo I've ever really done or spent time on.

When I did it, I had no idea about blending, or smudging graphite, which is why it looks so scratchy and raw. The values suck too, and I never finished most of it... the lid, the right side and the eraser all need work still. Maybe I will work on it again if I ever get unlazy, but I just found this in my stack of drawings today and had to post it.

I did think it was ok for a first try though, I spent a lot of time on proportions (I think I redid the key something like 8 times?), but whatever, here it is.

Maybe I'll do more from a ref photo sometime, if nothing else it'll help with my values (which I need oh so dearly).

looks great for your first try!

if you have proportion problems, try drawing a grid! 2-5cm squares as you wish. The smaller the square the more precission you will get on proportions! but easier

one suggestion, get a black pencil (not grey!) and use it for the dark areas. Trust me, it will make it more realistic
It's like you now want to draw a rainbow with Red pencil only, some colours cant be drawn! It's the same with black&white, pencil is grey, grey can't be black.. if you try to get black with a grey pencil, you will get a little more darker grey but with a strong shinning depending on where the light comes from hehe

Thanks for the comment and tips. I really do need to get a good dark pencil, I have a prismacolor 9b and it's almost silver, so I'll have to find a better one.

Values are one of things I struggle with the most, but I'm getting better at it through practice and critiquing a few friends.
