Description Hi, everyone. I just wanted to take this opportunity to talk about my most physically powerful female character. Specifically because, in the chapters I wrote in her origin story, I think I said that Ruby identified more as a boy than as a girl. Well... At the time, I didn't know that could be interpreted as her being a "trans" character. Ruby is a strong-willed tomboy who contrasts Jewel and, to a lesser extent, Cowl. Star is bisexual, and doesn't really lean too far toward male OR female behavior, as much as she's just silly and weird. Anyway, all I wanted to say was that Ruby represented no negative female stereotypes, and was more of a "Peppermint Patty" thing, or Spinelli from Disney's "Recess" and I couldn't think of a better way to describe being an incurable tomboy since birth than to say that she identified more as a boy. Also, her parents tried to make her a boy before she was born, so you'd think that ALSO implies being a trans, but it's mainly a plot device to explain her tomboyish behavior, as well as making her slightly mutated to help explain how she has powers later. My initial plan for Ruby was to have her and everyone in her generation be genetically engineered to be super-powerful from birth because of having to compete for the right to breed, but I decided there wasn't much room for story or character development. Anyway, Ruby was first conceived to be the female "strongman" in an effort to have heroines other than mystics. Also, at the time, strong women heroes were first on the rise, and I kind of wanted to fit in. In fact, at the time, developing Ruby as a superhumanly strong character involved giving her a level of misandry to fuel her conflicts with Jack. I had limits to how far I'd take it, though, and Ruby was always heterosexual and attracted to strong men as a primal need to pass on strong genetic material. And... I really couldn't condone Ruby hating Fuzz. I mean, Cowl has issues with Fuzz, but not because he's a man. And in general, I kind of toned down the wrath to be sass and bullying in order to avoid getting too far into anti-hero territory. Eventually, I realized that developing Ruby into some male-hating badass OR a Mary Sue, wasn't going to help anyone. Ruby should be an anti-bully who cares about the little guy, which helps explain her bond with Fuzz, and in order to truly care about the little guy, she had to have once been small herself. Giving her a little brother just helps to show that she's got a tender part in addition to being one tuff nut, and also helps to explain her later bond with Fuzz. Also, this year, I've seen a lot of videos on Youtube from Endymion and The Critical Drinker, and while I don't agree with everything I've heard, I find it easy to believe what they've been saying about Disney and their pandering for ESG reasons. The videos have also emboldened me to speak out against sexism, rather than just swallow sweeping statements or other preferential treatment against men for decades, which is what my Mom would have me do. I don't like Mysogeny either, and instead I do my best to balance things. It's not always easy... Anyway, just wanted to clear up that Ruby is NOT a trans character. She's a tomboy with a strong-will, strong muscles, and an even stronger heart. That's all. Thanks for clicking!
