Yes, Taiwan has a lot of wooden houese.
Japanese bring their life style and the skill of building to Taiwan from 1895.

They have master carpenters over there in Japan. Amazing skills. Always a fascination with blades, carpenter, sushi chef, or samurai!

That's true!
I think a part of reasons is that Japanese are good at protecting their culture and maintain it very well.

Strangely enough a lot of their architectural heritage would have been wiped out in WW2.

Maybe it has someting to do with modern development?
People will replace the historical architecture by apartments,parking places or department store.

As far as modernist style architecture is concerned, the Japanese have been leading the charge since as far back as the 1970's with very unusual and bizarre buildings. This co-exists with Temples of Nara and other amazing traditional architecture. Though hanging onto traditions in some ways that are hundreds of years old, they are also plunging into the future like nobody else. Fukushima and tidal wave events have also highlighted the "delicacy" of architecture and urban development, which, in their cultural view, is always "open" to natural destruction, hence the art of Hokusai and, of course, Godzilla movies!
